Hi all. I'm hoping to find a few people to read over a few of my short stories. In particular the first and second parts of a series that I'm trying to flesh out.
The setting is a light sci-fi near future in which geneticists cracked the code to bio engineer furs. First generations are people that are turned, second and later are naturally born.
The main character is Sofia Stone. Sofia is the only daughter of Samuel Stone. A tracker and survival expert Sam Stone owned and operated of Stone's Throw Expeditions. His wife Natalia died in a car crash when Sofia was 3. Samuel did his best to give Sofia everything she needed. The result was Sofia Stone, the mountain climbing tom boy. As much as she took to her father's way of life though Sofia was also gifted such that she skipped two years of High School and moved out at 16 to attend Stanford.
Part 1 The Searching Stones
The story picks up with a now 20 year old Sofia waiting at the space port terminal. Commercial space flight and orbiting civilian space stations are a thing. She is contracted for a year long stint doing research and manufacturing for surgically implantable sudo muscles. Her launch is scrubbed first by a storm and second when she's informed that her dad had died in a mountain climbing incident. Crushed at her loss she flies home to deal with his death and will. Sam Stone's will includes a message for her eyes only. That message tells of how for the past two decades he had built up a base camp from which he would regularly track and document a large green and tan winged reptilian creature... For 20 years having only told his wife and via the message now his daughter, he had been tracking a living breathing Dragon apparently living in the Alaskan bush. His last wish is for her to travel to that camp to both spread his ashes and take up his search.
Sofia takes her dad's records and begins examining them at which point she started to notice things her dad had missed. The Dragon seemed to be acting with intelligence and in several instances appeared to be carrying a bag over its shoulder. The only logical conclusion she could draw from seeing her dad's records was that he'd not been tracking a mythical wild Dragon but a person that had some how been made to look like a Dragon. That idea came with more than a few problems. First, she'd read up on the Furrification Process and knew that it was only used for mammalian transformations. She knew of no successful attempts at blending Avian or Reptilian genetics. More over if this Dragon had been around for 20+ years it would have had to been transformed at most a decade since Furrification itself went public.
This Dragon her dad and now she was searching for was somehow made despite being beyond modern science. With that idea in mind Sofia leaves home not to find the Dragon itself but its origin. That search leads her to the house of one Tania Philips, the now retired lead geneticist behind the Furrification Project a person that turned a Bio Chemist named Doogie into a Dragon.
Part 2 The Second Dragon
Sofia's search for information having landed her in Tania's home, her drive to fulfill her dad's wish that she search for the Dragon she now knew as Doogie seemed to compel her to become a Dragon herself. Tania comes out of retirement and gives Sofia her own set of wings such that she can find, catch and return Doogie. As the process would take at least a month to complete Tania's want to make sure that no side effects crop up from this her second ever Dragonification "Sofia's name for the process" Sofia stays first at the Laboratory dorm then at Tania's home over the winter and early spring. It's during that time that she gets to know Tania's family and friends including the Lynx Sam Winger who she bonds with over their both having lost their family.
Sam's story is its own thing but the gist of it is: Sam's parents die before her first birthday in a plane crash. She was razed by her godparents that treated her like shit and mooched off her enheartens. While in college she met Tania who went on to perform her Furrification. Tania became a sort of surrogate mother to her. She now owns a shop that runs automated electric taxi services that itself is a front for her true passion. Said true passion being building vast cars. Her personal car is a hand built frame up resto-mod of a Ferrari 612 with a bespoke drive train able to do 300mph (For a few second before the power train overheats and parts start to melt, overload, catch fire, ext)
Like Sam, her boyfriend Mat is a total speed freak. Like his fur would indicate the Cheetah is fast and wants to go faster. He and Sam are a perfect pair. Nothing more to say he's one of the most normal characters I've ever written.
This part also intros Sara and Pearl, a pair of Vixen and Bunny that work for Lin as contracted models. In truth Sara is more akin to a manager running Lin's business while Pearl was Lin's college room mate that kind of stuck around, became a bunny fur and just models for kicks.
Fair to point out now that Lin is a Fashion Designer, her husband Rich is a network Engineer. Lin being pregnant with triplets means she's not meant to be working and is just a we bit emotionally on edge... "Hell hath no fury like a pregnant tigress scorned." Or something like that.
I'm sorry if this is a bit much for a post asking for people willing to read and critique.
Fair warning to anyone that does read the stories my spelling is my biggest weakness.
