"Mainstream Fur"

I have been a part of a fur group since late September. I have recently been told that I am not a "mainstream fur".

I guess my question is... what exactly IS a mainstream fur?

First I have ever heard of it, but "Mainstream fur" sounds retarded.

I guess a Mainstream fur is another redundant term like Popufur. You aren't popular? :/

Ah great yet another stupid term furries has come up with, it should have stopped at "yiff" but nOooOOooo you all can't say "I'm gonna fuck you in the ass" you just had to say "I'm gonna yiff you in the butt tehee". :V

You used the word wrong yiff implies all those actions in it, like you don't say I am going to Sodomy you in the butt. I use it to imply that all parties involved in the act of sex are furry and its simply easier to say.

I would say, ask whoever said that to you. Who the heck is going to call someone out and say "You're not a 'mainstream fur.'"?

Just from the sound of it, I'd guess that it's some kind of elitist term for people who're only involved in the furry fandom, without joining or partaking in any others. (Master/Slave, Latex, Vore, Transformation, etc.)

If I'm right, then it's just another ridiculous term added to the fandom. As if we haven't bastardized the English language enough already.

Mainstream fur... Hmm, I guess rabid fan of furry who hopes one day to turn into their fursona, act in public a bit like their animal base for their fursona, and kinda blatantly force their behaviors in people faces to "express" who they are and "subtly" hint they're clearly a furry and people should embrace it.

That's just my interpretation. From my experience and first hand confrontation, it's what I see as a mainstream fur.

Then again, the term's very broad. It could just be a gateway branch to a number of subculture furs within the fandom. You got the I wanna be emo type furs that live with abusive, xenophobic parents, then you got the kinda slumpy, overweight ones with a fur suit who make it out to FurCon every chance they get. They're a little weird when talking with them and they smell funny. Then you got the net savvy porn artists who make a killing off the others with their commissions. There's all kinds really.

(Disclaimer as I know it's needed for the jumpy, quickly offended types. If you think you fall into those categories, don't get mad at me for pointing anything out. It's obvious as the sky is blue. I mean no rudeness behind my observations.)

If I had to guess(never heard of the phrase "mainstream furry" before), I'd say it was because of your fursona. Gorilla's are a very unusual species to choose in the fandom(as far as I've seen). Usually its foxes/wolves/dragons. Hardly ever see any primates.


Love gorillas by the way. The animal and the band. :p
