Make FAF Great Again

Tell that to the old staff that mass-quitted over the issue. Just saying.
Let's just say I know more about the circumstances surrounding that than you do. Like, it's a volunteer gig, and you can quit if you want, sure. But I have very good reasons to disagree with how they handled that situation.

Sure but that's with regular courtesy and mobs cant be trusted to remain consistant. That's why we have mods.

I mean, right now the forum is a mess from shitposting and trolls. What if it starts getting worse?

We arent prepared for anything. Yes, a big part is on us but you can say that for just about anything. The reason we have mods and admins is for consistency; because people are unreliable and fickle in mobs and can change based on who enters and exists.
You are not obligated to act as part of a mob. You are responsible for your own actions. Staff primarily exists to manage situations that get out of hand and deal with people who have no interest in or intention of trying to maintain a civil environment. The fact that people have shown themselves to be fully capable of toning it down when asked to suggests that the shitposting and hostility isn't an inherent function of the people present, but of them making the choice to not shoulder their own part of the responsibility of keeping the forums reasonably friendly.

I personally find it quite hypocritical when people who are not taking that responsibility complain about moderation. *shrug*

I'm not saying they handled the situation adequately, but I am saying that anyone seriously considering a mod position deserves to know what they're signing up for, the good and the bad. I think that's fair, don't you?

Leave a few hundred people to their own devices and see where that gets us.

I mean, yes, encouraging and holding people responsible for participating in that stuff is ideal, definitely, but for genuinely running a forum it doesn't work, especially if the goal is to get more users.
-
I shouldn't also have to remind you that members don't have any power besides ignoring. That has its uses but is useless if the point is to just cause clutter with spamming bullshit threads.
-
I've seen far more users years ago when I first became a furry. Still had regulars and recognizable but still there was way more variety. I can't help but feel that recent lack of care for moderation has lead to that shrinking number.

I've not said otherwise. Again, I was on staff during that exodus and know more than you do about the situation. As I have signed NDA I can't go into details, but honestly invoking that situation wasn't particularly relevant.

I'm sure you do, and I'm sure many details were left out at the time, but if Kalmor's journals on Weasyl are anything to go by applying for a staff position doesn't seem all to appealing, to me at least. Plus there's the issue of what happened to Silver Eagle when he was on the dev team for FA.

For the record, I'm not saying no one should apply for a staff position, just that there might be some caveats to consider before doing so.

It was maybe the biggest drama I saw there, and pretty much the final nail in the coffin of that forum. By the time the smoke cleared, there was nobody left to mod.
I would say the final nail was the whole kerfuffle surrounding #00Buck's banning and Zara bringing a Twitter dispute to the forums in which the mods handled really badly. It was at that time I noticed a lot of people leave.

In my opinion, no one who is active on this forum should be a mod. No matter what will happen the "favoritism" card will be played. Even though the mod isn't doing any favoritism people will think there is just because of the groups the mod is with. The new mod should be pulled from the main site as they are distanced from this forum.

I think we need someone who can update this site to meet the modern security standards (it is currently lacking even some basic security standards).

In addition, we need some innovation, standing still is moving backwards.
You need to innovate, create new things, but be thoughtfull of what is good. You can ruin something with change. You should aim to create something better.

So I think a good site/forum moderator would be a good addition to this forum.

I don't believe this is a democracy, that we have any proper say in it, other than a small nagging towards Dragoneer. Even then, if he's convinced of the need for a mod, I don't have much, if any hope that it wouldn't be himself handpicking instead of letting us choose.

Besides, I don't exactly trust community votes either, since what's most popular doesn't mean most competent.

Most people will vote on a popular someone. While not looking at the skills.
Then again, if we all want to vote on a mod, does that not mean we also need to pay for the server costs? Or will we not divide that democraticaly. (is that a word)
What I am trying to say is, that the person in charge get's the last say, and I think we can have some faith in the mods. They are doing this work for free, and because they love the community.
Isn't that the important thing? That they do it out of passion and devition? *smiles*

The new mod should be anyone because the forum is literally on fire with no leadership or guidence.

If we had the option to be picky we could but we dont really have that option right now. We need someone who regulars the forum, so why not someone who is already a regular?

All this talk of leadership makes me uneasy. I feel the role of mod is largely that of an administrator, with a touch of policeman at times. If we ended up with moderators who harboured notions of "leading" the forums, I think a lot of us simply wouldn't want to be around.

Also, I think a regular should have been here at least 1 or 2 years, or more, but again, I think a vote scenario could be very divisive. Look at normal elections these days, and extrapolate to furs. We do need more mods, but will be up to those who run the site now, if this even comes to a vote.....but I think, they won't do a damn thing.

A forum doesn't need leadership nor guidance. This forum is a loose collection of people who all differ in a plethora of ways who want to talk about Furry shit, nothing more. What it needs is proper enforcement of the rules and deal with people who stir shit up. Though staff could also act as an example of how to behave/act, etc.

If it's someone who uses the forums regularly favoritism may play a part in the actions taken by that member of staff. I am not saying it will happen, but it could happen. Though it depends heavily on the person, of whether or not they are able to separate their duties with their private/social lives.

I think the FA staff ought to decide who sits in the Mod chair(s).

I have some reservations - about it being up to a simple majority "popular vote", as this is about moderation - it's not a "popularity contest". If someone on here is "elected" - then I see a potential pitfall, as it could (possibly) call into question his/her impartiality (later on).. particularly if a friend (of his or hers) needs some moderating, or if the new Moderator (is seen) to be taking actions just to be "popular".

A Moderator that's worth his or her salt - should be above all of that nonsense.
