Mascots Vs Furries

Zaaz

What's where now?
Do you think that the roots of fur suiting are derived from the sports mascot, or were they developed separately? I personally think it's a cyclical affair where mankind have always seen themselves with animal attribute, which translated into us giving our sports teams the powerful animal icons as their mascots, and now it's becoming a more individual affair with the modern fur suiter.

Anyhow, that's my take on it. You can also listen to what Mogi and Yazzoo think about the topic too in the FursonaPod Ep3.

I think so. I mean mascot have probably been existing longer than fursuits, and so there's a chance that fursuiting originates from mascoting, since they both have the same idea of entertainment.
But fursuiting is more about expressing yourself and your character/fursona, then representing the animal mascot of an institution/club.

Claims that something involving anthropomorphic animals, identification with animals, depiction of animals or worship of animals is automaticly related to furry fandom in some way sound extremely unlikely to me.

Perhaps a link can be drawn in the admiration of certain attributes and traits which are sometimes linked to certain animals. Like a club may choose a mascot based on such traits, someone may choose a fursona in that way. But even that I don't find very convincing; it's too particular.

what came first, the fursuiters or the mascots? I don't know the answer to this question, but one could assume that much of what we do with fursuits is based on what sports teams started. Depicting yourself with animal traits is both the goal of the mascot and the fursuiter. Though the mascot is more of a representation of the team than of what fersona they are trying to display. So the individualism is certainly one of the bigger differences between the two.

I dont think that they were derived from mascots...

Actually, i think it was the other way around... Mascots sure bumped the furry community a bit, im sure.

The answer is no.

Furries sort of came about after people grew up and realized that they can still like anthropomorphic animals in art and create a fandom around it. However the fur-suiting aspect probably took good look at mascotting and realized they can use that and combine it with with personal characters which would lead to the creation of the aspect of the furry fandom called Fursuiting.

Mascots and furries are different.

Mascot-suits and fursuits are the same.

Both suck.

Mascots and fur-suits are the same. They are awesome.
But...opinions towards wether or not they are awesome or suck happen to not be the subject of this thread.

Obviously mascots (e.g. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc.) came first.

No, a mascot represents some sort of team or business. A fursuit does not.

A mascot-suit on the other hand is the same.

A fursuit and a mascot both form the same function. They are there to entertain and to represent. They are the same in that respect. The only real difference is that the person wearing a fursuit owns the character usually, where as a mascot is worn by someone representing someone else's character usually copyright to a team or business.

But, a fursuit can be a mascot, or become a mascot and still the character is owned by the user. A fursuit can be used in place of a mascot for areas that don't have the money to commission a character to specifically represent the business or team.

In any case neither of them really suck.

A mascot is a single entity, usually. Each individual furry is not a mascot. Fender, for example, is a mascot. Chuck E. is a mascot. My fursona is not.

I've never heard of a fursuit being used as a mascot, unless the business had a "fursuit" being made (although, in that case, it wouldn't really be a fursuit anymore, since I'm sure the business is not a furry business).

...

And yes, both suck. Fursuits and Mascot outfits are creepy as fuck. And the people who wear them are also creepy.

If a person uses their same suit to volunteer or work somewhere, over time the character or species can become associated with the group even though they don't own it and it becomes like am mascot.

You want to know really sucks? Furverts who think their shit don't stink and then turn around a point fingers. They suck just as badly as soccer moms or self pro-claimed hockey moms. To them it's a big game of "Baww, we want to be able to hide online and fap to porn and not have to hide"...

EDIT: I should explain. They point fingers at the mature suiters as the reason the fandom gets a bad name...but the mature suiters are part of the perverse side of the fandom. They are furverted the same as the people who look at the porn. Nothing makes their side of the the perversion worse than the others. So when a furvert says "Well you guys are the problem" it's the pot calling the kettle black. They are the kettle and the pot. Suiters are just one small part of that large perversion. So all they really do is say "Your fetish is worse than mine" which is stupid. The logic sucks. Without the suiters people would still know about the porn and the perverse side of the fandom. You don't need suits for that. All you need is a swift Google search.

Tell me though, what is so "Creepy" about fur-suiters?

"Like a mascot", but not a mascot. A mascot is usually more a permanent representation of the company/organization. A random fursuit is a random fursuit...

...yeah...

You don't think your fursuit thing stinks, but you find furry yiff disgusting.

Here's a better question:

What isn't creepy about wearing a nasty, ugly, sweaty, smelly, freaky fursuit?

I have got to love how every time we talk to each other you insist on putting words into my mouth. You need to work on better debate skills, really. Nice bit of bawwing fursecution there. "Baw, she does not like porn so she must think it is filth." There is a difference between finding people who don't keep their porn where it belongs filthy, and finding child porn, people who make, and distribute it, or rape kids, or rape dogs, or horses, ect filthy....and happening to just not care for porn. Learn the difference.

In the last thread we talked, you openly admitted you hate people who talk about yiff (or join the fandom for yiff, or post yiff...). I'm only restating what you said.

Or, if you want me to, I'll use the example of how you hate baby-furs (cubs):

I.E if a person is known for making cub porn, and the fandom accepts/tolerates it, and then he gets busted for running a porn ring, or having porn on his comp...the fandom can be implicated.

Or how you dislike "besties":

On the other hand, a person can have porn of feral fursona's because they enjoy the idea of sex with an animal, like a dog. They jack off to it because they imagine fucking the dog. They imagine the idea of raping it.

That can start to become borderline unacceptable. While jacking off to it does not hurt anyone, the same person who claims to only be a zoo but will never be a bestial...could have a account on Beastforum where they show up and link videos of them having sex with not just their own dogs, but breaking into the homes of neighbors to forcibly rape their dogs as well

Here is a better one. What makes you think that wearing a suit is nasty, ugly, sweaty, smelly, and freaky?

Well, unless you have an air conditioner in your suit, I would expect (and I know) that it gets very hot in a suit. Sweat=smell.

And the freaky and ugly part is my own personal opinion about fursuit-faggies. I've never found fursuits to be interesting nor good looking.

I think the first mascot came from when a furry dressed in a fursuit accidentally wandered onto a football field and successfully thought up a way to not get beat up.

1, Deodorant
2, Fans in the heads
3, Partial suits for warmer temperatures (As in, just tail, paws, head, and normal cloths)
4, Not everyone romps around in the sun in the middle of a Texas summer or something. Ever thought about people who fursuit indoors, in colder regions, or during the spring/fall/winter?

Thats exactly how it happened! XD

Well, people don't just dress up as animals to yiff or do whatever.
It's always kinda been in human nature to identify with animals and such... I think that just kinda carried over into sports and such.
If your team is the Lions, well damn, why not have a dancing lion out on the field?

Deodorant only works for armpit (unless you be puttin' it in everywhere...gross). Plenty of people sweat in other nasty areas (and it also depends on how well the deo works).

Fans in the heads are usually a more expense feature.

I don't really have much against partial suits (although I don't care for them either).

I would surely hope not. But lets be honest, I've met people whom sweat like crazy and do barely anything, even in a fairly chilly room (sweat from excitement, etc.)
