Millennials vs. Zoomers: What is "cringe" for you?

Guifrog

Blue Frog
A huge (friendly) debate blew up on Brazilian Twitter, putting two different generations against each other, as one side tells the other what they find to be cringy about them. It all started because somebody who was born in the late 80s asked younger people from late 90s/early 2000s what they consider to be cringy behavior among millennials.

A few things I picked up from answers given by the younger group:

- Obsession for Harry Potter and Disney stuff
- Drinking coffee
- Having breakfast
- Capitalizing the first letter of a sentence on the Internet
- Using emojis
- Skinny jeans
- #putting #hashtags #everywhere #on #social #media
- Using Facebook
- Listening to rock music
- Being crazy about cats
- Wearing tattoos
- etc.

Comments from the other side of the debate, however, have signaled that Brazilian Zoomers tend to:

- Love K-pop
- "Bruh"
- Overuse acronyms while typing
- Dance and post on TikTok
- Overlook the meaning of words such as "literally"
- Wear baggy pants
- Binge-watch TV series
- Love octopus plushies
- Cancel
- Force carioca accent (the one spoken in Rio)
- Put bread in the fridge
- etc.

Of course this doesn't apply to everyone, as we're talking about trends. But this caught me wondering how things work in other countries, so I thought I'd ask what you guys have heard about the so-called "cringy" behavior. What do younger people tend to find cringy about previous generations, and what do previous generations not really commend about the new one, in your place? All generations are welcome to provide their input here, by the way.

I'mma ask you to give examples that avoid politics, religion and similar sensitive topics for the sake of it!

P.s. added a little parenthesis at the beginning coz this has gone differently from what I expected. I was seeking for non-serious, mocking fun and examples of stereotypes lol

For me, cringe is:

  • Flagrant hypocrisy
  • Lack of self-awareness
  • Mocking people who are having more fun than you and/or are more authentic due to your own insecurities.
  • People who smugly applaud themselves for being unique when they aren't that unique.
  • People who subject themselves to avoidable humiliation due to their own lack of self-awareness.
  • What the kids are calling "cheuginess" and/or "basicness."
  • Building a personality around mocking cheuginess or basicness.
  • (Actual) SJWs
  • Anti-SJWs
  • Overuse of cliches like "oof" and "yikes" and other Twitterisms and Tumblrisms.
  • Zeds criticizing Millennials for not fixing society.
  • Boomers and Gen Xers bragging and/or whinging about what they don't understand or how society has changed in their lifetime and it's sooooo unfair.
  • Rooting one's personality or identity in, essentially, consumption of mass-produced products and properties. (Liking things is fine! Buying things you like is fine. It's all a matter of degree.)
I'm a Millennial, by the way.

What birth year pertains to these groups? Is millenial 90s and Zoomers 2000?
There's not a consensus but Wikipedia provides this tentative chart:

Otherwise, I meant for the thread to be more of a lighthearted thingy where people poke fun at each others' habits lol. Maybe it's the way I worded the title or something

For example, my hair has this division on the side. But a Gen Z once told me that was cringy, "why not divide it on the middle"? And I told them that was a boomer thing, and we both laughed

Gen z seems to be into super-expensive cellphones. To the point where they prefer it to a computer with a bigger screen!

Both generations are cringe. And I am ashamed of my fellow millennials.

Directors cramming fortnite and other cringy shit in movies.

Most people who went to see the tom and Jerry movie were adults who saw the classics... we all left as soon as Jerry did orange justice or when Tom flossed.

Blatant ripoffs. For every hit game or movie. There's an endless number of shitty ripoffs aimed to make idiots rich just cuz someone can't afford the actual media.

Kids YouTube videos like talking tom.

Morons who modify their exhausts. Sure its loud but now everyone wants to destroy your car.

Slapping stuff into a game cuz its trending. Just look at fortnite and you'll see

-Bragging and humble bragging.

-Pompous and grandiose attitudes.

-People who pretend to have so much empathy and kindness in their hearts, but are actually terrible people who bully anyone who complains about their own serious struggles (like death of a loved one or a pet, domestic abuse, etc). Totally not saying this from experience. =/

-People who put on a "nice person" front, but are actually not very nice and are fake.

-Internalized misogyny and "pick me" girls. (Example of pick me girl: a woman who tells a married man that she "likes" to pick her instead of the woman he's married to and who he is still madly in live with)

-Gaslighting. Like, just don't... :)

-People who hate homeless people to the point that they wish they were killed off.

-People who project their insecurities onto others.

As an X'er who has always been a misfit and outcast concerning anything trendy or stylish, my considered opinion is: WHO GIVES A SHIT?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to listening to Renaissance motets (Jean Mouton for the win!), which is what I was doing before I stumbled on this thread. Call me in 400 years or so and let's see how much of what y'all are talking about still matters to anybody.

Looks like a lot of people ate Super Cereal this morning!

YouTuber isms is obnoxious but I feel like that's pretty much any generation. This game is kinda hard for me, I don't talk to a lot of people. XD

(It's closest to the type of post I was expecting so yep. ówò As in, what kinda examples of generational stereotypes are there in each one's countries)

Personally I don't think I take trends so seriously either. But I find it curious, and interesting, to hear differently-aged people's opinions on trendy and old-fashioned, because I get entertained and surprised with situations like the one I've mentioned - a young guy suggesting me that parting the hair in the middle is trendy, when I'd see that hairstyle more often in older portraits.

In the end, it's as you say - it won't matter. Each generation blah blah, each person bluh bluh, everyone's different bloh bloh. Trends sometimes go, then come back. But I dunno, I just enjoy watching it and hearing that having breakfast is "cringy" to the (stereotypical) Brazilian zoomer lol

I mean, we're talking about broad, somewhat arbitrary groups here, so there will be generational differences and commonalities. I've come around to being pretty proud of my generation and the zoomers I know make me hopeful for the future again. I don't want to disparage earlier generations, though, since every generation has its share of bad examples.

Absolutely

Again I guess the way I've worded the OP sounds like I was meaning to make people eat up one another in a serious way rather than jokingly, so my apologies for that

Things I find cringy:

-Fortnite;
-Vaping;
-Everyone making that same "Jaden Smith" face on social media;
-Looking for that "approval of the crowd" in everything you do;
-Obsession with brands;
-Video games as a whole honestly;
-Those "boys vs girls" memes where girls are portrayed as dumb emotional wrecks and boys as unfeeling bearded chads. Fucc you motherfuccer I am a boi and I have emotions too.
-The stereotype YouTube thumbnails where guys are doing that "Home Alone" surprised face.
-Popular video titles like "I did THAT for 6 months and the gym and THIS happened..." Bro what did you try man, come on, tell me already!
-CorpseHusband's voice
-Bottomless mimosas for brunch.

I'm goofing around of course, people are free to like whatever they want :3

Biggest cringe thing for me is people who are so heavily ironic that you can't talk to them in any meaningful way without them trying to make it funny.

A lot of these seem less like complaints about beliefs and behaviors maintained by a specific generation and more like complaints that people have about society in general.

Curious case here:
I'm a Zentenial/Zoomer but I grew up as a 90's kid with some classics on tv such as alf, fresh prince of bel air, munster family(on nick@nite), the addams family(on nick@nite), etc, and other topics too

But probably my list will go directed for earlier generations maybe? And based on a shorter person list rather than general stereotypes.

With that said, here's my list:
  • Some claim that their sources are correct, even if these are outdated even by years. Even if you show them evidence otherwise
  • Most get tricked by WhatsApp/Facebook/the-like chains that claim that "aliens will rob their food and money to make a giant spacial casino" rather than reliable sources
  • Some generalize that 'x' thing IS or ISN'T and no gray shades in between, as binary computers<
  • "Because I say it >:|" +"... But.. We weren't talking about anything"
  • "Pause that multiplayer online game kid! That can wait for later!"
  • Most prefer summaries over detailed and interesting videos/reading/talks about cool topics. Even if they asked you for a detailed explanation.
  • Lighting up pictures on pc until they are overexposed and indistinguishable like a tiny and shiny sun
  • "AAAAA!! IT'S THE END OF DA WORLD AS THAT BOOK SAID!! *Dunks head in sand as an ostrich*"
  • "Don't cry! And stop now, you'll flood us and we lack boats to float!"
  • Some don't........ Finish phrases when.....
  • "Don't worry you can tell me everything, except if it is [*7 hours later after a loong list*] you need something? :3"
  • *Opens the door or just wants to be friendly*, *they growl at me for any reason*, *closes the door*
  • "How does that work? Those new generations are crazy af"
  • "That's wrong and incorrect! No one does things as before >:|. No one rides chalicotheriums anymore! they choose horses now?"
(Hahaha... not based on any personal experiences or anything hehe.. xD did I do it good?)

Haha I love this Idea! :3
Although I dunno if I did it correctly >~<

I laughed at most of those tbh, although I don't know which ones came from somebody of the Gen Z or from a Millennial (although I can infer at some)!

Brazilian people on Twitter brought a few more, so lemme illustrate what I mean:

Zoomers about Millennials
- Like wearing flat shoes
- Watched Friends (TV series)
- Laugh using huehue or kkkk instead of capitalized KKKKK
- Drink "litrão" ("big liter" of beer in a literal translation. Zoomers say that word sounds sooooo dated)
- Say they're gonna pay the boletos (instead of "pay the bill")

Hahaha thank you!
All of those come from Z to Y(millennial) or earlier but maybe I did format it ambiguous honestly xD

kkkk ≠ KKKK?
Lmao those are funnily sympathic tbh
