Well anime is known by everyone pretty much. People know what DBZ and Sailor Moon are. But they're not into it. Same with Star Wars. Everyone knows what it is, but most people I know don't follow it religiously.

I'm not even trying to go that route but it's hard to get over being around people who love sports and being made to feel inferior because you don't. It's hypocrisy because the way some people obsess over it and are considered normal is the same as someone with another hobby who is considered a loser.

I find that hard to believe considering Mr. Normal McNormalson is posting in a thread immediately preceded by "Furry Porn Thread (NSFW)".

Some colleges in my area actually have sexual fetish clubs where people discuss them and whatnot... I would never attend the meetings. But I was in a club in the same classroom. A poetry club. I guess now because I was in that classroom beforehand, I'm affiliated with the sexual fetish club. According to your logic.

Well yes we all agree that there's some truth to every stereotype. But in many cases, it's a stereotype that applies to a lot of people outside the targe group.

If I go by "nerd" being studious and smart, then liking fictional franchises has nothing to do with either of those. The scientific aspects of it aren't realistic at all.

Again, when I read the descriptions of those... at least 90% of the people I know fall under one of those if not both. I don't get how those could be actual disgnoses; nearly everyone has them. The point of a diagnosis is to point out something abnormal, usually.

Something can be potentially mainstream and "for weirdos" if people say things like, "Well, I like A, B, and C, but I don't like D, E, and F, and I'm certainly not one of THOSE people!"

It's the same with anime. Some people will acknowledge that they like "the good stuff," and then quickly explain that they aren't weeabos.

Late to the party but; the only nerds that I ever saw get "bullied" thought they were getting bullied for their interests or for their perceived superior intelligence, when in reality people just didn't like them because they were genuine assholes. The vast majority of "people don't like me because of my weird hobbies!" instances are more than likely a case of someone being an obnoxious person and having absolutely no self-awareness. They're convinced that they're great and when the idea that they are not great is introduced to them they have to convince themselves it is because someone is jealous of their perceived intellect or because someone is "intolerant" of their hobby/interest/whatever. Lots of people who think they have self-esteem issues are actually straight up narcissists who can't accept criticism.

Because fixated on their own interests and own inner world, nerds may not pick up on standard social rules and cues that other people live and die by--indeed, nerds are often dismissive of many social rituals and signalling behaviors, finding them silly, pointless, weird, and trivial.

Result: The other monkeys find the nerd "weird," and notice that he's not trying to establish himself in their hierarchy, and so they kick his ass.

When nerds display their creativity or intelligence, this can trigger feelings of anxiety or insecurity in those around them. The nerd's peers may decide that the nerd is actively trying to show off, suck up to authority, make fun of them, or otherwise "pull a fast one." Result: The other monkeys decide to perform a public service by taking the smartypants nerd down a peg.

From there, a lot of nerds are actually pretty overbearing, rude, and arrogant, because they've gotten a lot of positive strokes from adults for being smart and creative, and because they've developed an inferiority-superiority complex as a result of being teased by their peers. Result: More ass-kickings.

In my case, I initially didn't realize just how much other people really resented me when I would correct or criticize them, or show off what I knew. This was mostly because adults had always applauded me for these same behaviors.

I ultimately developed a chip on my shoulder from being bullied and teased, so I did turn into someone who oscillated between being a condescending asshole at some moments and practically begging for affirmation and acceptance at others.

Basically, my core problem was that I learned how to interact with adults, and the same skills didn't translate to dealing with other kids.

Another problem with nerds and geeks is that because they know a lot, and enjoy sharing what they know--sometimes to the point of being DESPERATE to show it off--is that they don't know when to shut up.

Bottom line, a lot of nerds and geeks piss people off because they won't fucking stop talking. (I am also guilty as charged here.)

Case in point, listen to this audience at a brony con. They can't stop riffing, re-riffing, shouting shit out, repeating each other's jokes, and none of them are as clever as they think they are (especially after the umpteenth quip):
