how prevalent is the furry fandom outside the US and north american continent?

at first i would've named this thread "european" furs but in actuality i just want to hear about furs from all over the world and how they experience fandom in their area

i also want people to talk to that are in my own timezone

i live in croatia, that's in the balkan peninsula, and furries are virtually unheard of here. anything "weird" or too obscene or obscure is viewed as socially unacceptable. we only have one sci-fi con thats very underground. fandom is generally poor or inactive here

what about you? talk about your culture and life here if you want!

my life is boring too, but i personally would never move to the US or live there voluntarily.
a) its too expensive, b) its too unsafe, c) i dislike the culture, d) bad food lmao

I'd never move to the U.S. The only place I'm interested in visiting is New York. If you live in central or western Europe it isn't very difficult to find IRL meet ups. I got one in London coming up this Saturday. Plus there seems to be at least one convention per country in western Europe so it's not a massive disadvantage compared to the Americans.

Yeah. Although there are conventions in Russia. How much does it cost to get from Ukraine to Russia? And for that matter what's the travel policy given the current situation between the two?

Hope it's a dream if I think about getting to Russia... We have a small war... And I don't think my parents let me go there. :l

From what I have been told the LGBT situation in Russia is in large part a problem of prejudice among the population. Gay clubs do legally operate in Moscow but they usually keep a low profile as the government there doesn't outright ban non-heterosexual relationships but suppresses public displays of it (so pride parades for example). Although police are not known to punish a same-sex couple holding hands there is a good chance you will get some thugs going after you if you do that and the state there does very little to stop them. I hear tourists are treated better but I imagine it might depend on what country you are from. If you are from a more LGBT+ friendly country then the Russian government may do more to protect you. However Ukraine aren't much better than Russia on the LGBT issue so what would happen to someone travelling from Ukraine, a country with more oppressive attitudes to LGBTQ people I am simply not sure.

There's a lot of Portuguese and Dutch architecture and most of us descend from Native Indigenous, Portuguese, Dutch, Angolan and Guinean.

Weirdness? YES (if you stay in the capital)! There's furries here, too; however, the fandom tends to concentrate around the Southern region.

I feel you, i'm from Argentina
I'm from a very "culturally closed" zone of my country and almost no people knows about the fandom (that's why i had the confidence to tell my family about the furry fandom. I don't know why i did it but it was a good idea). I'm probably the only fur from here you'll ever met in your life (?
There is a con in my country hosted this year at the capital of my country, which sadly it's very far away from where i live and i'm just too poor to attend to it or even travel to there

Here in Norway the community is pretty small, we do have our own internet community though called Norpaw. We sometimes meet to either fursuit or just have fun together. We don't have any furry conventions here so most people just fursuit at cosplay conventions and many go to Germany to go to the great furry convention there. Norwegians and Swedish people usually share platforms online since the community is small in both countries, it's not a problem sharing since we can understand each others languages. Most people in northern Europe are very tolerant towards furies and many don't seem to really know what a furry is but people don't really mind us.

that sounds really nice! were somewhat near-ish germany (although it takes 12 hrs by car to get to berlin), i didnt know there was a convention there :0

Whats with the culture there? In all the Nordic countries people are pretty chill.

well were way more opinionated than nordic people for starters haha
were also pretty bigoted, much to my dismay. especially towards romani people and other expats. you get made fun of for not fitting the mold or being different. subcultures are pretty small and inactive, but otherwise tightly knit here - which is why they're hard to find. i barely found my larping group, and even then theres few of us

the dnd and scifi scene seems to be more active, but its all homebrew and private; not easy to find unless you know the right people.

as for furries...... again, virtually unheard of. people here were vehemently against the istanbul convention and people swear a lot at pride parades.

our education system is also pretty broken, although all/most universities are free so thats nice.

we do have a budding game dev scene, as seen with croteam (serious sam, the talos principle), little green men games (starpoint gemini), gamepires (SCUM, collaboration with croteam), as well as a pretty good private college for programming, game dev etc., so im at least optimistic about getting a job here if i cant make it outside.

I'm Eurotrash XD been moving across central Europe for, oh, twenty years now? Germany, Denmark, Poland mostly. Not by own choice, though - my father loved escapades and was looking for opportunities, and I had hard time finding a job at the time, so was sticking around.
