Not This Hardcore Into Software

Hai Thar.
So I will give you a bit of backstory so you know whats going on, what happened, and how I came to have this... stupid problem.

My friend and I were on MSN, chatting away and he asked if I wanted to see some pictures of himself on his spring break vacation this year.
I said sure, he goes all kinds of places in Europe (he lives in Poland), and has tons of scenery pictures, pictures of himself making faces, just some cool stuff.
Anyway, so he starts sticking them in MSN chat window, and with the new version they pop up next to the chat and im viewing through them and figured id show some of them to my grandmother (she appreciates scenic pictures in a weird manner, but shes in her 80s, so whatever).

After a few minutes, I suddenly realize that I cant view ANY of the pictures that I saved from the MSN window.

They all look like this when I click on Properties:
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa53/jaywizardess/pictures.png

Now, he assured me that ALL of them are supposed to be .jpg files, and all I did was change the name. You know, the name I want them to be when theyre on my computer (instead of DSC34847349 I wanted them to say J's Vacation)...
Thats all I did to them.
It usually never screws up any of my other pictures that i get for the animal shelter or anything else. Its freaking me out.

I run on Windows 7.
Using current version of MSN Messenger.

I can open PDF and all kinds of other file types, and its not working. Hell I tried to use an online version of a file converter, with horrible results.
I am PC savvy, but not this savvy when it comes to something like this. I can tell you how to fix your internet or tell you how to clean things out, but... this? This is a new one on me.

Anyway, any help or suggestions, or places I can go to view these files (so i can end up saving them as .jpg or taking screenshots) would be helpful.
Thanks.

Make sure to rename them using a .jpg extension (it may help to unhide file extensions temporarily so you know for sure what you're doing). If that doesn't work, have your friend dump them into a ZIP and resend them all at once; anything else is scarcely worth the effort.

It's definately the extension. Notice how in her screen shot says 'Type Of File: File'? Cause it has NO idea what kinda file it is. She deleted the extension, so now Windows has no idea what the file is.

Yup. Here's how to fix it:

  • First, put all of the pictures in a folder on their own on your desktop. Say, Pics.
  • Hold the Windows key and press R. Release the Windows key.
  • In the Run box, type cmd and hit enter. A command prompt will appear.
  • Type cd \Users\Face\Desktop\Pics and hit enter.
  • Now, type rename * *.jpg and hit enter.
  • ????
  • PROFIT!
