Disgruntled Joe Blow homegrown terrorist. Wannabe Islamo-nut with an axe to grind against everyone else, who he no doubt blames for all of his problems. Not sure whether to file that under Radical Islam or Wild Card, I'll choose Wild Card because he IS probably just a wannabe.
Of course, it's entirely possible he never actually intended to blow anything up and was just in it to scare the crap out of people. Kind of a "Ha ha I put a potential bomb in Times Square WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW rabble rabble" scaremonger loony, which opens up the possibility of a political extremist trying to make a statement about how horrible our law enforcement and antiterrorism forces are, or somesuch.

Likely. Actually, it looks like he was trying to make a BLEVE, which if it had detonated, would have made a rather large crater. That's what the Columbine whackos were trying to do with their propane tank too.

This is America, Tash, things go a bit differently here.
There was a lot of terrorism/terrorism attempts/attacks from the far right ever since Obama got elected.
Here's a few that come to mind:
- The IRS attack
- The Pentagon Shooting
- A far-right militia in Michigan (Also known as, "The Hutaree") made an attempt to start a revolt by planning to kill police officers and set off bombs during their funerals. (Yes, they had the equipment and the bombs to do it.) although the FBI arrested them before they could actually go through with the plan.
There are a few others as well I think.

He actually tried to purposely set it off by using a fuse, and lighting it up to set off the fireworks and blow up the propane tanks, reports say that the fireworks went off, and smoke came out of the car, but thank God the propane tanks didn't go off.
OMFG, I didn't even know any of this had happened until now. The far right in the UK are generally peaceful and try to gain power (and have succeeded in doing so in some cases) through legitimate democratic means. Though given the USA's sometimes unnecessarily violent actions (the American revolution, 1812, taking half of Mexico, the crushing of Indian resistance etc.) I suppose that it's probably ineveitable that the extreme right are whack-jobs who are willing to resort to violence.

I thought the word "terrorist" meant something derogative... Not something to be proud of. The word terror in "terrorist" is not bound to be a specified definition to something pleasant. It means "fear." Causing fear in others is sadistic. Being sadistic is what people would label as evil. If you think I am narrow-minded, think about this. Sure, they might have been deceived, but it does not change this fact:
