There should be a way for me to see the most popular submissions without having to type in something in the search box, since that limits the results instead of showing me the most popular ones out of everything on the site.

So, this morning we had yet another troll hitting the front page by repeatedly uploading the same disturbing photo.
Would it be possible to have a system that places restrictions on newly-created accounts? Such as submissions not being visible on the front page?
The idea is kinda based on the system Wikipedia has. Newly-created accounts are not “confirmed” and have certain restrictions placed on them, such as being unable to edit protected pages, and some actions may be automatically blocked by edit filters. Accounts are upgraded to “autoconfirmed” when they are at least 4 days old and have made at least 10 edits. Most spammers and vandals get blocked before they hit that mark.
could something similar be implemented for FA?

Nice as it sounds at a brush, reality is it would probably not make a huge difference - trolls would create the account and upload shock photos four days later. Back in December 2017 there was a massive troll upload spree on FA - that attack involved accounts that had been registered for literal months. It might slow down trolls a little bit to give mods the ability to flag a submission on deletion as troll excrement and autoblock new uploads with a matching checksum for the next X amount of time, but even that could fairly easily be circumvented if someone is hell bent on making themselves a nuisance.

I also remember seeing posts about people hoarding FA accounts for a year and using them to flood the site. This was many years ago, but yea. Definitely illustrates the free time they have.

Perhaps, similar to the edit requirement for autoconfirmed Wikipedia accounts, there would be a submission requirement.
With Wikipedia, your account can sit for as long as you want, but it won’t be autoconfirmed until there are at least 10 edits. Some vandals do get around this, but the vast majority don’t.

If front page and browse page visibility is suppressed, especially, it'd be trivial to make the account's first several uploads be some random stolen furry art. If you don't tag it and keep the title/description minimal, it's not going to show up in the search, either, so no one will see them to report them. At that point you're back to square one anyway.

I'm not trying to say it wouldn't be nice to have some sort of protection against these things happening, but realistically it sadly would have to be a lot more sophisticated than what works on Wikipedia. Not least because regular users can't undo someone else's FA submissions/comments/foo (nor should they be able to).

I also remember seeing posts about people hoarding FA accounts for a year and using them to flood the site. This was many years ago, but yea. Definitely illustrates the free time they have.
It may have been that long the time I was referring to - I don't remember the exact details, just that many of the accounts were at least months old. It happened like... within a couple of days at most after me resigning, so I felt like shit (and very powerless/helpless) for the remaining staff having to deal with it. You can imagine what the tinfoil hatters thought. :V

It's not like it's very difficult to make an account and enter the details into a spreadsheet/database for a script/bot to use at a later date.

Discord parses images through artificial intelligence to identify abusive content.

Fallow offers a fair point. Also, I feel the need to add that slowing down trolls even a little bit is better than not slowing them down at all.

There is a shock image troll constantly coming back, there NEEDS to be a barrier to even stop this

could 1. start a 8 hour delay on any posting of submissions 2. have a program that recognizes these kinds of images and 3. have a ip blocker, just because vpns exist doesn't mean everyone is gonna go through the trouble of getting one

also work with the person who made filter affinity, seriously

exactly, if it takes too much effort they will feel its too much effort and weed them out

making it harder for them to start over will just drag them down and make it feel like a waste of time

I'm making my comment with no knowledge of how much computational resources discord puts in to scanning input, btw.

I don't know whether it is feasible for FA; I just know it is something discord does.

i don't know if this has been suggested, but in my opinion, change the tags that 'mature' is now 'adult' and 'adult' is now 'extreme' which would be for extreme/disturbing fetishes like snuff, scat etc.

because mature doesn't really seem to have many applications, and some images could really disturb a typical user browsing the front page for something like mundane porn

I don't have much to add to this, I just really like this idea so I wanna second it.

I'm not sure if it's the norm, but I usually view "mature" as tasteful or casual nudity which isn't inherently sexualized. Gives a bit of nuance between extremes in my opinion.

More or less what the rating guidelines say. Though looking at what the guidelines say, it seems a lot of folks don't follow them as they are laid out. That is, Mature is treated as "R-rated" and Adult is treated as "X-rated"
But looking at the upload policy page, it seems more like Adult is supposed to be "R-rated" while Mature is closer to "PG-13."

the mature tag doesn't have to be removed, no, main thing i wanted to get across was that an 'extreme' tag is needed and a way to filter out things in it, similar to the SFW button that's already there

Could there be a way to not be notified of certain users' reactions to your posts? there's one user in particular that spams me with laugh emojis, including times when I was talking about being in physical pain due to a broken bone, it's pretty vile behavior

Maybe take your own advice, I have no idea who the hell you are and am not sure I've ever talked to you, not sure why you're that upset but you can definitely try not being that foul out of the blue
Makes ya wonder if it's the dude but they forgot to switch accounts.

This is my only account, and a staff member can confirm that for you, if you insist.
