Opinions on "Art Hogs" ?

Don't commission on FA. Try DeviantART, Weasyl, or another site that has a calmer commissionary community. Places where pricing, buying, and bidding is less predatory.

From what I have experienced, you have to make it big to be well off in FA. Otherwise, small commissioners and small artists have to stick together.

I think I'll have to try it out.

DA is also notorious for being impossible to sell art at any reasonable price. Too many amazing artists there end up selling their work for pennies.. Sometimes literally.

That true. Business is aggressive there unless you know the right people to commission. Prices can fluctuate like crazy with quality.
Though if you're patient enough, you can find very good artists at a reasonable price.
It's probably better to take commissions off site.

Of course I can't name names. But I wanted to discuss members of the community who commission, bid and buy an absurd amount of art, specifically things that are considered YCH's.

Once or twice I've encountered some of these individuals in pieces I was interested in, and even seeing their name has been intimidating enough to either resign early, or straight out autobuy. Because these individuals will buy 6, 10, 15 pieces a month and spend $2000, $3000 like it's no object. and these people often have pieces of the same character in the triple digits.

What's people's opinion on this? Is it something out of control that shouldn't be able to be abused to the degree it is . Or is it something "poor" people just have to suck up and get over?

*To be clear, I am specifically referring to people who have completely gone off the deep end, buying 10-15 pieces in a month all for the same character, and almost jealously getting into bidding wars with anyone who challenges their chance at a piece she or he wants*

Can't help but feel a little angry when I decide to get an art piece, I usually get one once every 2-3 months.. but could get more if I wanted... nevertheless, start having pieces I like picked off by the same individual sometimes multiple times in a week. I've become so fed up with it I've considered contacting the person directley to voice my grievances. It's neither of our faults that we like the same artists, but it's gotten bad enough I've pretty much abandoned FA :(

Maybe you need to shop around alot more, too.. as if you're going to the same artists over and over again, then that may be a part of your dilemma. If you diversify your artistic portfolio (assuming you haven't yet) - then it might give you some better results, so it pays to shop around. Who knows, right?

People with a lot of cash have it to spend, and it's just a part of the market, regrettably.

If artists are charging too much outside your own finances, than it might be time to look elsewhere, too.☺

I commission maybe eight to ten pieces a month; and I always shop around (even though I have "regulars" that I commission all the time).

I can't afford not to. ☺

I dont know if OP is still reading posts or not but I can understand the frustration here. What I would do however is go and make a thread in art auctions and sales and state you are hiring. Seems like a good way to have artists come to you.

DA has a hard cap at $80 maximum if you use their built-in commission widget, and then the site takes a cut. Every since they introduced their Points system, they destroyed the market over there. Because so many people do commissions for points, people expect all artists to do the same. That in and of itself isn't bad. But the problem is that most points commissions are for under 100 points.

1 point = 1¢. People are doing full-colour commissions for under $1, and now that's what the market expects.

Oh my gosh. That sounds horrible.
I was considering going back to DA, but I'm *definitely* not.

Actually, DeviantART and Weasyl's commissionary communities aren't calmer. Artists may PM you, calling you selfish or threaten to report you for having commission prices that are "too high", resulting in the artist increasing the price.

Yeet-

It's like they're demanding that we work at less than minimum wage or something. Wow~.

Well that's where you/the commissioner have to do research. I've encountered some and laughed a little every time.
DA community has some stuck up and annoying people, but there are good artists there I've seen who do commissions with good quality. You must do some digging if you have the patience.

Depends on how much quality you're looking to commission. If you're going to ask for quality commissions like this: ( www.deviantart.com: Furry ) you're going to take a LONG time. At that point, look on other art websites.
