I have just been watching a video on YT where a guy is talking about the internet statistics of pornography, for example the top keywords typed into a search engine, how many sites there are, etc etc. For some reason his channel was shut down because of this video. o_O

Anyway, This got me curious, why is porn so common? According to statistics the porn industry brings in a revenue greater than apple, ebay, amazon, yahoo, netflix, Microsoft, Google, Combined.

What is it about pornography that we the human race find so appealing?

  • Keep the forums "Work Safe" - PG-13 is used to describe this but nudity, overly graphic for example is a no. This requirement includes stories, avatars, and signatures. As a rule of thumb, if you (either you personally or normal users) would not want your mother or a child seeing or reading something, it's PG-13 at minimum.

Sex and sexuality are extremely important (and pleasurable) aspects of the human condition, and pornography is simply the most obvious way short of actual participation to express and share that.

Because, I guess not everyone is pretty enough to get sex, so they look at porn for something to get off too? It's natural to want to pleasure ones self.

EDIT! That sounds really mean and it's not meant to be. I mean, not everyone can even do it for some phsyical reason or another.

I think eating, breathing and pooping classify as extremely important aspects of the human condition. You can go without sex for years. Without one of the three I mentioned - you're dead in, at best, a month.

You have an itch. You scratch the itch and it goes away. That's kinda what masturbation is, and that's pretty much what porn is - a masturbation aid.

That's a lot of people with that particular itch to scratch, and since porn at least entertains you while you're doin it, and the Internet makes it sooo easy to find porn, it's kind of a match made in heaven (or wherever you classify masturbation as belonging).

Along the way, someone realized that if you had REALLY good porn, people would pay you money to look at it. Because porn is kinda like drugs - you develop a tolerance level when you're exposed to the same stimulation over and over. Plus, after the 1,000th viewing, that really hot pic/video clip just doesn't do it for you any more and you need fresh stuff. Just like listening to the same 100 songs over and over and over.

So you have a lot of bored, vaguely to ragingly horny people who just wanna get off but so jaded that they basically need the pay-for-porn because it's the only stuff potent enough to satisfy, now. (Either that or there's some weird status symbol attached to being able to afford it).

Bet if you looked up the top world industries you'd find porn right up there with the drug trade in terms of profits.
