Possibly a good or bad idea

Hello all,

I have had an idea in the back of my head for the longest time now. I've had the idea of trying to start a furry club at my university, but I feel that it would be a bit difficult to attempt.

I had been active in the anime club for over a year, and the things I witnessed the club go through make me feel that perhaps my idea wouldn't work out. The club had been repeatedly accused of showing porn and many people would come in large groups in an attempt to elect their friend for a seat in the club. It just a lot of drama and scandal here and there. It seemed a bit unbelievable. The club seems to be stable at this point (due to some smart and competent people mind you). A lot of people who came to the club were also (I hate to say it) strange in their own rights. Myself included.

With that being said, I can't imagine what would go down if I tried to start a club for furries at my university. Who could I get to sponsor us? Who would actually show up and help to organize things? How could I keep the porn under control? So many questions pop into my head. Plus my knowledge of the fandom is a tad abysmal. But it's something I would love to see happen. And I'm hoping that I wouldn't be the only one who feels that way.

So what do you guys think? Is it even possible? Or would it cause more trouble than its worth?

Start a club, prohibit the showing of or in-depth discussion of porn with the threat of banning offenders. Simple, really. Just get a few people behind you to help you with that, and you're sorted. All you need to do is ask nice or get a furfag friend to join in with you (if you have any around you).

Gibby makes a perfectly good point, and I agree that it would be wise to ensure you publicly state that your Furry society is completely removed from the mature aspect of the fandom to prevent any potential confusion from both Furries and non-Furries alike.

I do, however, believe you will encounter problems with a Furry society -- more so than with the anime society: Furry is ostensibly notorious and has a bad reputation, and it's likely you will either disappoint Furries who are interested only in pornography or chase away potential members through prohibition of mature discussions. It's possible that the university authority will be quick take action against the Furry society: anime may appear to be innocent and child-oriented when somebody with little knowledge of it does basic research, but due to the Furry fandom being so dominated by mature art and fiction, and the number of websites that perpetuate the idea that Furry is something that is solely about the pornography, you may find that their first encounter will be negative. The anime society may have this problem to a certain extent, but due to the range of ages and backgrounds that encompass the entire anime fanbase, and considering that the most popular series are more child-friendly, it's definitely something you have to go searching for.

Were I you, I would be reluctant to create such a society due to the fandom's notoriety; members may be prohibited from discussing or viewing sexually explicit art within the club, but their actions in other places may catch the attention of others and raise questions about what the Furry society really is. Remember that most people will have absolutely no knowledge of Furry, and if they discover a Furry society member wanking to dog dicks and horizontal dragon vaginas -- among other things -- it's going to create a bad image for you.

I am by no means attempting to discourage you, but simply suggesting that you should consider this careful, and bare in mind what Furries are like.

Are there any other Furries at your University, and what are they like? You could hold the meetings in an open, semi-public place? The cafeteria, perhaps. You wont get accused of doing things behind closed doors then.

I understand that I can't control how people act and such, and I would open to mature discussions and content...to an extent mind you. It's just that the university is rather cutthroat about their policies concerning clubs. I just wouldn't want to be shut down right when we start though.

There are some people who would be interested in it on campus, but I don't know them exactly. And I have a friend who could possibly help, though he doesn't stay around here anymore.

I don't understand.

You didn't use any blatant sarcasm in that post.

I think I love you.

Depends. If your university is filled with people who spurt internet memes and heard of furries, then no. If they are the kind who probably don't know about furries nor spend their time 24/7 online, then you can give them a good impression of what furries are. One of the tamer events can include watching furry cartoons, such as Sonic or Looney Tunes. Avoid the sexual/debate/drama stuff.

Hand. Cannot. Erase.
Depends entirely if there are loads o' furries there.
If yes, then go for it and start a club dedicated to drawing yiff and whatnot.
If not, draw it yourself :V

I think it's a bad idea... I mean, what would you even do in a furry club?

This, what is there to discuss? Sexuality? Not allowed. Politics and current events? Why make a furry club? Video games? Ditto.

I mean, what else gets discussed here? There are no such thing as furry TV shows, just TV shows with anthropomorphic characters (There is a difference and it is immediately obvious to anyone in this fandom who isn't oblivious). Anime has an entire subculture built around it filled with various media and art forms, it has penetrated our culture and its influence is everywhere in cartooning and gaming. Furry on the other hand is a virtually off the radar subculture that most people (often correctly) dismiss as a dumping ground for sexual deviants and internet junkies.

I mean, Furry is literally just a giant amalgamation of internet culture and queer sexuality with dog heads and dragons. There is nothing that sets this community apart except the visual artwork and costuming; so if you want to make a furry art appreciation club go for it, but I get the impression that this will go in the exact opposite direction you want it to :V.

This + inherent immaturity of furries may explain all the drama within the fandom. A club would probably end up the same way.
This isn't to say it would be impossible, just that the managers would need to be very good leaders.

This is a bad idea considering the reputation and track record furries tend to have. I'd think it'd be time ill spent to start up a club just for furries just because of all the things that would need to be covered up from all different directions.

No matter how proper you try to make it, SOME people are gonna show up and go on about cocks. Furries love cocks. I hate saying it, but I really don't think it'd amount anything more than awkward meetings half the people sittin in the corners on their laptops browsing FA and most others fagging on about furry stereotypes or something.

It'd basically be an in-school furmeet, it might sound nice, but at that rate you might as well seek other venues. I don't think the school would be cool with backing something they really don't understand/ something that can be horrifying to some with a simple google search of the words furry or furries.

Things like "art club" and "anime club" are easily recognizable. "Furry club"? What? "Anthro Club" Huh? I think you'd have a lot to explain, and like I've said, people doing internet research on their own is dangerous. You'd have to be cleaver with the name to get around all that AND convince them that it's not something easily grouped with another club. "Well why the fuck can't you just go to the art club?" Yeah.

The ONLY good I can see coming from it would be to make it focus on the art and creation aspects of anthropomorphic characters in various mediums. Even then, I think the topics would digress and wonder on to the dark side.

You could end up gettin some strangers who show up and have no idea what the club is about... Could be good to get some new pwoplw in it.... could be horrible to, if you have said nerd browsing FA porn on their laptops. Word would get around.

Maximum Awesome.
Your Anime club story sounds like "The Anime Club" comic by Gunshow ( http://gunshowcomic.com/ac/ ).

I guess it depends on how large your university is. I'm going to a branch off of Penn State, with a main campus large enough to have its own town and zip code. 50,000 students. If I went to main campus I would have no trouble recruiting furries.

If your campus is too small, you might not have enough people for it to be a good enough "club".

Gonna have to agree with some of the other posters. Not such a good idea.
You're going to have to explain the basis of the group. What is it's purpose? What will you do? What will you discuss? Also, the meaning of the term 'furry' has been so butchered by the media and television that it could create a lot of negative feedback, or even create/reinforce a lot of negative stereotypes about the fandom. About the anime club, people pretty much know what anime is. But in your case, people would probably question what exactly the furry group was, or what furries are in general... Go ahead, type in 'furry' on google images. Yeah... not pretty. If the anime club got crap for porn, the furry club would probably be much much worse off, considering the amount of negative publicity (and the sheer volume of yiff on the interwebs).
Just think about it a little bit. It's not a bad idea, but just think about it in the situation you're in. Again, I don't know everything about where you are/your college or what the management for that stuff is like, but like I said, I don't really think it's the best plan.

Well !@#$ then...

I would love to have something like that at my university, but you guys are right.

I was hoping of maybe discussing different things like the history of the fandom, how people create suits, the artwork, anthro characters in the media, a bit of zoology maybe, and even how the whole sexual aspect got started. We could have debates and discussions on the matter and everything. I pictured it would be like Furry 101 or something, lol.

But how do you take the raunchy out of the fandom? I mean they did pretty well with controlling the hentai (and overwhelming amount of yaoi for that matter) in anime club so I wouldn't think it's impossible. And to be fair I kind of look at that stuff as well. But as long as you don't go waving it around for everyone and their grandmother to see, it's fine. But of course there will be the diehards who come and muck everything up. And the creepers as well. I would feel much better about it all if I had some folks to plan it out with. I'm only one man...

Oh my god, people might think something!
Don't, listen to these guys, it could work perfectly fine. There would be plenty to do in the club, I mean look at all the discussion that happens just on these forums when we cant even see each other in person.
It would sort of be like a furry meet.
