Oh boy, 1782. You know what this means?

I CAN START DROPPING HISTORY LIKE THE REST OF YOU!!!

This year in aviation, the Montgoflier brothers launch the first hot air balloon to an altitude of 2 km. The following year, they would make the first manned flight in a lighter-than-air aircraft. This put them significantly ahead of their predecessors, who for the most part had all been taking the legend of Icarus a bit too literally.

Assuming a 600kg bear, yes. But you need a slightly larger than standard balloon (assuming 1,000lbs lifting capacity per 65,000 cu. ft of balloon volume). Whether or not they can be accompanied is another story entirely.

Side note: While checking a timeline of aviation history, I came across this:

August 27, Flight of Le Globe, an unmanned experimental hydrogen-balloon, in Paris (built by Professor Charles and the Robert brothers). It flies 25 km (16 mi) from Paris to Gonesse and is destroyed by frightened peasants.
