Now that I have the time to type something out: This year in aviation history, Baden Baden-Powell (the brother of the guy who started the scouting movement, and also yes, that's really his name) begins experimenting with kites designed to lift people. Think along the lines of a parasail. His prototype lifts a test subject to an altitude of 50 feet, and later models would lift their occupants to 100 feet. These kites were to be deployed during the Boer War in South Africa, but arrived too late to be of use. They were never used by the British military again.

Nope!
Hey, Tr273, are you working today? I hope you got the day off.
No I'm working today, it's a quiet day so I should be finished in a few hours, I'm going to see Star Wars once I'm finished.

So much history

This year in aviation history, German meteorologist Arthur Berson ascends in a balloon to an altitude of 30,036 feet, setting a new record for altitude. For reference, the legal oxygen requirements by Transport Canada dictate that you must have oxygen supply available for all crew when flying for any period longer than 30 minutes between 10,000 and 13,000 feet, and constant oxygen supply for all aboard above 13,000 feet. Previous record attempts had killed or nearly killed those trying due to hypoxia.
