Time marches on: This year in aviation history, the airspeed indicator is invented. Using a combination of pitot pressure (ram air) and static pressure, this instrument does exactly what it says on the tin, and provides accurate airspeed corrected for altitude.
Fun fact: I encountered an ASI failure once. Ended up being some pressure line caps left on when the plane went in for service, and didn't get taken off before the plane was handed to us. The flight itself was highly uninteresting. We took off, saw the ASI showing that we should be in a stall, then came back and did paperwork.
