Wow....time flies here!

1939: Raymond Chandler publishes The Big Sleep, perhaps his most famous hard-boiled detective novel, featuring Phillip Marlowe.

“It seemed like a nice neighborhood to have bad habits in."-observation of Marlowe

Naval Fact:
Over the course of the war the UK would lose 132 destroyers which almost equalled the destroyer force at the outbreak of the war. The first was H.M.S Blanche mined in the Thames estuary on 13.11.39.

More great books from 1939:

James Joyce-Finnegan's Wake
John Steinbeck-The Grapes of Wrath
H.P. Lovecraft-The Outsider and Other Stories
Katherine Anne Porter-Pale Horse, Pale Rider

(or such are ones from the list that I've read and enjoyed)

First editions (with slipcovers) of any of these titles make a wonderful late birthday present!!!

The construction of a new, sturdier Squirrel Containment Tower is begun in 1940; great minds meet in The Salon du Simo planning its elaborate architecture, decor and future inductees.
