AAAAAAAAAAAAAA -Sukhoi, 2020
Well, new page so you know how it goes. This year in aviation history, the first-ever SAAB (a SAAB model 17) takes flight for the first time. The simple bomber sees a relatively short service life of 7-10 years before the surplus is sold to Ethiopia, but it's the first step in Sweden's eventual rise as a small but strong aero manufacturing country.
Also this year, two Avro Ansons belonging to the Royal Australian Air Force No. 2 Service Flying Training School are involved in a mid-air collision near Brocklesby, NSW. The upper aircraft (tail number N4876) descends onto the lower (tail number L9162), who is sitting in the upper Anson's blind spot. Both planes are interlocked, with the upper plane's engines losing power and shutting off. The navigators and the pilot of the lower Anson bail successfully, while the pilot (Leading Aircraftman Leonard Fuller) of the upper Anson lands the interlocked planes in a paddock southwest of Brocklesby. For his trouble, he was promoted to sergeant, then confined to barracks over bragging about it to the press.
Yes, somebody landed this with no fatalities.
Note: The upper Anson (N4876) was repaired and returned to service.
