Interesting fact, my maternal grandfather was one of the first 100 US soldiers sent to Nagasaki after the bomb fell. He was part of a survey team. He didn't talk much about what he saw there when he was alive (pretty much kept quite about his whole experience of the war). It was just too f***ed up evidently.

Thankfully his time there did not render him sterile or else my mom would never be born. He did die of cancer though.

They rarely talk about their war experiences like my great grandfather.
He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy during WW2 and on June 1st 1941 his ship H.M.S. Calcutta (D82) was bombed off the coast of Egypt and sunk. He survived but 107 of his crewmates weren’t as fortunate, he lived until 1984 with a slight shake in his hands, and naturally he never talked about it. He was quite chatty about his time in America, for some reason after he was picked up he was sent there.

Same with my granddad. I forget which regiment he was with. But he was captured in Italy and forced marched to Germany. Very rarely spoke of what happened while he was a PoW.
