This year in aviation history, the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark flies for the first time. Canada was initially interested in buying these in lieu of the Arrow, but plans never came to fruition. Instead, it became a staple fighter for the USAF and RAAF, with the Australians retaining it all the way up to 2010.

1964 was the first year in which the classic Mini was victorious at the famous Rallye Monte Carlo. Car number 37, registration 33 EJB, driven by Sir Paddy Hopkirk, co-driver Henry Liddon.

I could be wrong, but I believe this was the first time that the winning car and both driver and co-driver were all from the same country (the UK).

In less reliable car (and aviation) news:
(Although thinking about it this is more a general fact)
Throughout the time the Vulcan was the nuclear deterrent for the UK a number of squadrons were kept on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) supposedly to be able to get airborne in 15 minuets. This was a problem for some of the sites because the QRA quarters were slightly too far from the active aircraft for the crew to just run the distance so a number of vehicles were supplied of various reliability. Most memorable for the crews was the Morris J2, a baulky starter on a warm dry day it was usually quicker for the crews to run in the winter than wait for the thing to finally cough into life. Another 'feature' was the column mounted 3 speed gear changer, first and second gears became increasingly harder to find as the vehicles got older sometimes leaving the driver with either 3rd (kangaroo start anyone?) Or throwing it into reverse. Apparently during suprise test drills the inspectors sometimes had difficulty keeping a straight face at the sight of a J2 hurtling backwards towards the aircraft.

Also this year in automotive history: The Ford GT40 competes at the Nurburgring for the first time. The entire project is a revenge plot by Henry Ford against Enzo Ferrari over the cancellation of the sale of Ferarri to Ford by Enzo. In 1966, it would break Ferarri's winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, sweeping all podium positions. The saga of the most petty car ever built was made into a movie and released in theaters last year (2019).

Enzo Ferrari seems to inspire epic levels of revenge in people. As I recall Lamborghini was a tractor manufacturer who bought a Ferrari, then wrote to Old Enzo and said he was very happy with the car but felt the clutch could be improved. Ferrari's response was something like 'Well if you think you can do better, go build your own f*****g supercar!'

Mr Lamborghini...

Everyone but Alfa Romeo, anyway. Though it's mildly amusing that they keep insisting the new V6 turbo engines in the Giulia and Stelvio QVs are not, in fact, the California V8 with two cylinders chopped off (they are).

Hmmm...a Mini might be an unassuming car for me to use to catch cheetahs!!!
My first car was a Mini. :D A proper sized one, not one of the huge BMW remakes.

I've always wanted a classic Mini. But at the same time, I wouldn't say no to an R55 Cooper S Clubman.
I'd love me another classic. Preferably a 1071cc Morris Cooper S, but they sell for silly money (like £50k+).

I had an opportunity a couple of years ago to buy a rust free MkII (IIRC) rolling chassis for $200 CAD. I happened to not have any means of bringing it home, so I ended up missing out on it.
Ooooooh!!! I'd have found the cash somehow!

Now it's 1965, this is the year the Minis scored a second victory at Monte Carlo! This time number 52, registration AJB 44B, driven by Timo Mäkinen and co-driven by Paul Easter.

Poo. So I'm one post out. Damn.

You're off by a post ;)

The money wasn't the hard part, the issue was getting it from Vancouver to Moncton. I was all ready to send it by rail before CN cancelled the shipping contract. Turns out they absolutely will not touch shells that don't run. A lot of trucking companies won't either, for some reason.

This year in aviation history, Trans-Canada Airlines changes its name to Air Canada. The airline and the maple leaf roundel have since become the pride of Canada for their service in shattering some blatantly untrue stereotypes, by showing the world that some Canadians can be absolute c*nts.
