This year in automotive history, SAAB Automobile begins production of the 99. The dumpy styling of the 99 adapted a number of aircraft design cues (which was SAAB's schtick from the beginning), including a wraparound windshield that is from personal experience, an absolute bitch to find a replacement for. This car was the epitome of function over form, prioritizing occupant safety, practicality, and ergonomics while looking like a rejected love child of a Cessna and a mid-80s Volvo. But while it looked the part of an ugly duckling, this car would include a couple of notable firsts, including the first mass-production turbocharger (1971), and the first electric heated seats (1972).
