My word....I missed the 1980s, that hugely amazing decade for punk, hc, post-punk, new-wave, early industrial, and so much else!!!

Ah, well!

In 1998, Johnny Cash runs a full page advert in Billboard Magazine, to "thank" the country music industry for their support of his (arguably) brilliant recent material, which they refuse to play:

Jeez, you guys move quick. This year in aviation history, a McDonnell-Douglas MD-11 (tail number HB-IWF) operating as Swissair 111 crashes in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia. The cause is determined to be a cockpit fire, but whether the pilots succumbed to smoke, became disoriented, or lost control is not definitively known. This happened near where I got my commercial license, and I've spoken to people involved in one way or another, including terminal controllers, SARtechs, and pilots under JRCC Halifax, and I've always held a particular fascination for this crash. I got the opportunity to visit the Peggy's Cove portion of the memorial when I started flying out East.

I occasionally listen to the ATC audio as a reminder to not take anything for granted. If these guys crashed doing everything right, I shouldn't throw everything away for anything less.

Moving on: This year in aviation history, American 1420 (flown by an MD-82) overruns the runway in Little Rock, Arkansas. Poor decision making and get-home-itis are blamed, contributing to a cockpit environment that could charitably be described as a clusterfuck. A local thunderstorm was labelled a contributing factor, with the pilot's inability to configure or decide on whether or ot to land being the main causes. The captain and 10 passengers are killed, but 134 passengers and crew make it off the plane.
