This year in aviation history, Concorde F-BTSC operating as Air France 4590 hits a piece of debris on the runway at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris Gonesse. The punctured tire of the Concorde sends high speed shrapnel into the left wing and engines, causing the #5 fuel tank to rupture and igniting a fire. Due to the high takeoff speed required for the Concorde, the plane is unable to abort safely and lifts off, remaining airborne briefly before crashing into a hotel.

A few mechanical improvements were added to the remaining Concordes shortly afterwards, including Kevlar-lined fuel tanks and upgraded tires. But due to other external factors, the type would only remain in service for another three years with no successor.

This year:

'The Marshall Mathers LP', Eminem's first third album, is released (my bad, mistook it with The Slim Shady LP, which I thought was his first album. As it turns out, it's his second.)
'Parachutes', Coldplay's first album
Bruce Dickinson returns to Iron Maiden in 'Brave New World'
'The Sickness', Disturbed's first album
Steely Dan returns after a 20 year hiatus with 'Two Against Nature'
'Stankonia' by OutKast
'All That You Can't Leave Behind' by U2,
'American III: Solitary Man' by Johnny Cash
'Kid A' by Radiohead

Very very sad, but a pretty cool way to go.

I recant what was said. Don't do it to @Ravofox

They wouldn't have been able to do it anyway, because I'm back in 1600s New Amsterdam :p

Also, NEW MILLENNIUM!!!!!!!:D:D

Also this year in aviation history (unless because I got ninja'd by 4 other people right now), a 747 (9V-SPK) operating as Singapore Airlines 006 hits construction equipment parked on the runway during takeoff. This isn't a particularly important accident, as it retreads mistakes from previous accidents, nor is the death toll particularly high (a bit bleak, I know), but I wanted to show you how 9V-SPK and 9V-SPL were dressed up.

It is, however, Singapore Airlines' first and only fatal accident. Which I suppose in retrospect is pretty damn important.

Well, there was something interesting about the accident...they were very good pilots but tried to take off from the WRONG RUNWAY!!!

Which seemed like a rehash of the Tenerife disaster, getting the airport layout confused and having zero situational awareness between the plane and ATC.

Also this year in aviation history (for reals this time), an Airbus A300 (C-GITS) operating as Air Transat 236 becomes the second Canadian airliner to set a gliding record, gliding for 65 nautical miles when the plane runs out of fuel due to a leak. The previous record was set by an Air Canada 767 (C-GAUN) in the 80's when the plane got loaded up with insufficient fuel because someone mixed up kg and pounds.

I don't think it's a coincidence that we have a air cadet program that teaches teens from 15+ to fly gliders.

Also on that note, we had a student take off on from a taxiway once. They didn't last long at the school.
