Well, welcome to 2003.

This year in aviation history, space shuttle Columbia breaks up on re-entry, killing all seven astronauts on board. This is the death knell for the aging space shuttle program, which was already on yet another lifetime extension past its original 15 year service life. In 2004, then-President George W. Bush would announce the mandatory retirement of the shuttles, bringing the program to a close in 2011.

Also this year, the Concorde finally retires from service. All surviving examples are distributed amongst museums worldwide.

Also also this year, Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites flight test Spaceship One for the first time, becoming the first privately built aircraft to exceed the sound barrier.
