Predators and Prey

Power, but at what cost? Why not just, IDK, conquer an empire or something?
Not that the empire I currently inhabit is conquerable or anything.

Well, it's also about personal power in solitude. It appeals to the outsider, in particular - vampires operate in the shadows, after all, and don't need help to be formidable. Plus vampires have that gothic/Victorian appeal, are capable of having a moral compass, and can be fancy AF. :3

I mean, you can be a badass hermit and be "personally powerful" in solitude or something.
Although I'll admit vampires look really cool, so if you're willing to sell your soul to change your appearance for the better then... You do you?
What does "the outsider" refer to?

For the record, I've been thinking about this for a while; I have a rather unhealthy obsession with vampires, but only when they're solitary vampires, and I've been trying to puzzle it out.

My boyfriend and I actually had a semi-serious conversation about what would happen if I became a vampire?? Like, these are the important questions, clearly. XP

I don't think that's as crazy as it sounds. Insane, unexpected situations and what values you have that would prevail in them are of high importance to relationships. While you COULD ask what would happen if something realistic occurs (what if I get cancer) some unrealistic calamity could also shed light on your respective characters (what if I become a vampire).

What does "the outsider" refer to?

Just what it sounds like; people who feel they have no place in society. For my part, I became severely depressed after a series of unfortunate events in 3rd grade, and I have poignant memories of being alone by the forest next to the playground. I was alone a lot in my early childhood (I was an only child too, which probably didn't help). Having that kind of symbol to look up to, knowing that loneliness doesn't need to be a bad thing, can help a lot in times of trouble, even if it's kind of stupid and edgy in hindsight.

I'm better now, but it took a long time.

Ooooh. Oof. Sorry. That sucks. I thought "outsider" might've been some lingo that I just didn't catch on to. As I mentioned, I'm new. Please pardon me.
And IMHO it's not "stupid" or "edgy". While vampires aren't the BEST role models, they're (un)living proof that perfect solitude isn't debilitating.
