PRAISE THE F A C T S!I’m just adding to the ongoing series of facts on supersonic flight.
Below is Vulcan XA903 fitted with the Olympus 593 engine for testing.

This particular aircraft was one of the last Mk1 vulcans build and rather than going in to RAF service was retained by Bristol Siddeley as a test bed for various development projects.
These were:
- The Blue Steel Nuclear missile (The replacement for the Blue Danube atomic bomb)
- The Olympus 593 for the Concorde
- The Rolls-Royce/Turbo Union RB-199-34R engine for use with the Panavia Tornado (Much to the amusement of the test crew a 27-mm Mauser cannon was also fitted to the airframe for testing, the only time such a weapon was fitted to a vulcan, and they found the aircraft made a pretty good gun platform.
Despite the important work this aircraft did over it’s life it was eventually scrapped in 1980, with the nose being salvaged and held in private ownership since 1992
