I lived off of it for 5 months in 2018, and just got back from a 50 day CA to FL run in Dec & Jan- all free camping ^^

Edit: and careful what you wish for- I was actually stranded at that particular site with a broken collarbone. Pretty place to heal up though!

Still, it'd be nice to get out every now and then. I've never done a long distance bike trip before and I haven't been camping in ages.

If you can find the time, pick a few places to visit and go! It really doesn't cost much if you're free camping and cooking for yourself. The National Park pass in the US is $80/year and that winds up being a lot to do for just a little money, and freecampsites.net is gold.

The cost isn't the restriction, it's the time. I've got 25 free consecutive days to cross Ontario to Moncton and back in between semesters. That, and I apparently own the only unreliable Honda made in the 80s, but that's another issue.

You can go a long way in 25 days! I made it to FL in <10.
And tell me about unreliable.. One would not think that you'd have to drop the engine and split the case on a BMW within a decade of its manufacturing. One would be wrong.. 'Least I know how it works now.
Japanese engineering from here on out I believe..

Ah, motorcycles. I have to measure both fuel and oil economy because thumpers are great for making oil magically disappear.

E: Hondas today seem to be breaking that old image of being sturdy, dead reliable machines. But from the 80s, everything but the Ascot seems to run forever on oil changes and the occasional checkup.

I can say my thumper does not drink oil (yet), and with Beemer's fuel mapping I get around 65mpg which is great for a 650 ^^
Even still, I'm severely tempted to sell it and buy an old Honda CT90, I think that thing could go anywhere.

You shouldn't put the Ascot down. It may teach you enough that you save more than its value on mechanic's fees next time around! Besides, breakdowns are all part of the adventure! ;)

Oh believe me, I'm not knocking it. It's an oddball and I love it to bits, but trouble free it ain't. You're right, though. Some of my best riding memories were from being on the side of the road with the onboard toolkit, watching the sun go down in the middle of nowhere while trying to jury rig it back together.
