Phew, getting a bit of cabin fever here, what with 'normal'winter, and everything closed. But as soon as it warms up this week and next, gonna head out, and do some hiking at Sleeping Bear Dunes/Glen Lake/Lake Michigan. Was a long, quiet winter, and I'm itchin' to get out some.

Bought some very ripe, tasty mangoes today, and diced up a few, and added a bit of simple syrup and left 'em in the fridge for a few hours, and am now having some plain yogurt, with fresh mango, and mmmmm, mmmm. Makes me wonder why I have just not added fruit to plain yogurt before, I guess maybe the time. From simple to complex, I think this virus will see me doing a lot more cooking and general 'lil culinary things. Plenty of time!

How interesting, this contrasts so much with what I had a few days ago; green mangoes with spicy chili powder and lime.

I think mangoes are really under-rated, overall. Though, they have gotten a good deal more popular, than in years back in the US. (in part due to the popularity of Mexican, South American and Indian foods)

And they can go in such a wide variety of dishes, from main-courses, salsas, appetizers to desserts. When they go on sale, I always like to pick a few up.

I used to live in a place with a park full of mango trees, so we had mangoes all the time, and it was fun picking them up from the trees or the ground as a kid. They have even become a part of my childhood. I love all kinds of mangoes, from green to ripe, they are all really good.

I wish more municipalities would focus more on edible landscapes. There's so much we could do if we stopped thinking of vanity and saving a buck.

I was talking with a group of activists at a city meeting recently, and a big part of why more helpful things that look like low-hanging fruit (pardon the pun) aren't done is just liability. If you eat a mango from a store and get sick, their business insurance covers it, but cities don't want to have to deal with that type of policy.
I wanna pick mangos at the park too darnit >:c

Yes, it would be great if everyone focused on making landscapes more useful for us and cities worked on better policies to make it happen. I hope everything changes for good one day.

That reminds me of how we managed to get the one pomegranate, which are usually expensive, in the supermarket the other day. my favourite fruit:D

Yes, they are. But why not defy the standards and what people usually think by being on the opposite side of your animal.

People expect roosters to be mostly herbivores and thus prey, but roosters also eat worms and insects. Wouldn't it be great and fun to defy everything and being for once a predator rooster? That would come as unexpected and interesting.

I just ran out of dried prunes. I was dipping them in almond butter and they were the best thing..

I'd be really psyched to see CA or the federal government come up with some more graceful methods of handling liability from city or church organizations..

You should totally do it! Go plan a city! :p

It'll be nice if there were easy-to-access train stations all over suburbs...
I remember listening to something about that in a podcast along with the struggle CA has with all the homeowners opposing new affordable housing (NIMBYs can bite my buht and I don't even want a house.) It said they tried that (in Oakland I think) but ultimately decided they didnt see enough use so they went to shuttling people to the bigger stations~

Oh, that's another very amazing fruit! And I'm glad to see they've become so popular; at one point, they were very seasonal: you could only get them about 3 months out of the year, late fall to December. (or at least in the US: they are still best, then)

This year, I'm going to try to make a Pomegranate Pie, something I have heard of, but never tried. It uses just the juice, in the style of the filling found in a lemon meringue or key lime pie. I think that next to the mighty watermelon, this might be my favorite fruit, but it's so hard to rank them, really...like comparing apples and oranges : P

I have an interesting mango story. I believe I've told it before, but there may be some here who haven't heard it. I was visiting my brother down in Belize. I had gotten off the bus, and there was a Guatamalan lady with two five gallon buckets of mangos. She was struggling to get onto the bus with them because they were so heavy. No one was willing to help her, so I turned back and picked up the two buckets and put them on the bus for her. She spoke only Spanish, and my Spanish is poor. She insisted on giving me two mangos for helping. I refused, but she was persistant, so I took them. So... I'm walking down the street in San Ignacio holding a mango in each paw. People start pointing, poking other people and pointing, and staring at me. I felt very uncomfortable about this, so I ducked into a restaurant to get some lunch. I ordered the lamb chops with asperagus and fried potatoes. I ordered a soda as well. When the waiter came back, I asked him if he knew why everyone was staring at me. Even the three other patrons in the restaurant were staring. He said, "You have mangos." I was like, "Yeah... so what?" He said, "Nobody has mangos now. They aren't ripe yet." I told him about the lady and the bus. He nodded and said that the mango crop in Guatamala gets ripe before the crop in Belize does. I told him to take the mangos and divide them up with everyone in the restaurant, including the cook. He was like, "Really? You would do that?" I just smiled and nodded. In a few minutes, he came back with a couple of slices of mango on a saucer, and gave everyone there a little bit of mango. Everyone there was very happy with me that day. Had I known about how hard they were to get, I would have purchased the two whole buckets and saved the lady the long trip to Belize City. I blew my chance to be the most popular gringo in town. lol
