It's weird how Russian bands manage to incorporate so many foreign influences into their music, yet sound so quintessentially Russian.

Aria is a special band, they already existed in the Soviet Union (not a Country you'd expect a Metalband). But they're great, the song I've linked was probably one of their best.
It was released in 1991, so shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union

Whoa, Aria was founded in the eighties? I had assumed they were an early nineties band. I can definitely hear some western influence there, though.

Yeah, they were highly influenced by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but added their own style.
Some people blame them to just be a "Soviet Maiden copy", but seeing that there wasn't really a way to learn Metal in the SU, I think saying that is unfair. The communist government didn't like the growing Metal Scene, and even if the band was able to release albums, they didn't have an easy time as they didn't get much state support.

Some people blame them to just be a "Soviet Maiden copy", but seeing that there wasn't really a way to learn Metal in the SU, I think saying that is unfair. The communist government didn't like the growing Metal Scene, and even if the band was able to release albums, they didn't have an easy time as they didn't get much state support.

Big shock. The government didn't like anything that deviated even slightly from the common norm. Wanted to hold all the strings.
