I think there are actually some interesting similarities between the Southern and Australian accents, such as elongated vowel sounds and the r dropping (r dropping is hardly unique in the English speaking world, it's a defining feature of British standard English, but apart from many African Americans it only exists in pockets of North America, specifically the coastal Northeast and parts of the South. Apparently it used to be much more widespread in the South, and r dropping amongst African Americans is probably a retention of this.)
