It would be funny if in some game it turned out that all that was an antagonist wizard's doing, and a plot point would be to get him to stop doing that, so female characters in the game world could fight more effectively

I think the only game I've seen avoid it is 'Spellforce' where the armour was pretty much uni-sex.
(Except one set of magic robes.)
