Is it advisable to speak the Queen's English in all parts of Britain? Or would people laugh at me? : P
Just speak 'American' you'll be fine.
Interestingly when I was over there I tended to use my normal accent but I would also switch to 'BBC Home Service' if whoever I was talking to didn't understand.
(The 'Geordie' accent is noted for flattening all the vowles and a certain quickness of speech so all the words tend to run into each other.)
