Meta the rat licks beer from a puddle in a nearby tavern. "Gee, some adventure with a fox bard sure would hit the spot right now", he thinks to himself. "I could get gold and XP".

So... the salvager salvages stuff the rats have spoiled, which adds value because... the... stuff the rats spoiled was private property, but the salvager works for the player directly, so the result is an increase in the player faction's assets. Let's go with that. Or the rats' poop is an expensive commodity, like bat guano, and the added value comes from that. *nodnod*

The bishop obviously refers to how rats have inspired everyone with their snuggliness and cuteness, and a religious subsect espousing the admirable qualities of rats have sprung up, resulting in much snuggling and increased social stability. I get it, yes.

And the apprentice refers to rat alchemists taking on apprentices, resulting in an increase in the amount of alchemists, which is good for everyone.
