Because role playing is meant to reflect reality, or reality as it might be. You’d be a poor storyteller if you told stories with little bunnies who never have any conflict or suffering and where nothing ever goes wrong.

Very true.
When roleplaying as myself I would never want to write as being in pain or discomfort as I like to roleplay to distract myself from what ails me.
But OTHER characters that aren't myself, oh boy do I make them live through hell. Makes me feel better about suffering.

Eh I tried that. Didn't really make me feel any better.
I would rather look at the reality of the situation and think of how it can get better instead of roleplaying out specifics

Although I do enjoy having each character reflect a core aspect of my being.
