Hehehe! Okay, here's my crazy theory about pitayas and why they look like that.
Maybe the cactuses that produce them are interdimensional doors that lead to an interdimensional being or universe being completely made out of edible brain, and every certain season they bring that matter to our world packed in the form of pitayas!
Sounds crazy and surreal enough to me!
