A shotgun starter (officially called a Coffman starter) is basically exactly what it sounds like - a modified or custom shotgun is installed on an aircraft engine and starts the engine by firing a blank shotgun shell through a tube. On reciprocating (piston) engines, the expanding gases actuate a piston and through its own mechanisms, effectively kickstarts the engine. On turbine engines, the gases are directed onto a starter turbine, starting the rotation of the engine and therefore the engine. Due to manufacturers and the FAA hating fun, these systems dropped off in popularity after WWII, though shotgun-starter aircraft continued to see service into the 2000s (up to 2006 for the English Electric Canberra, and 2014 for the Hawker Hunter).
Wow interesting! :3It is! And do you know what you get during this month dedicated to me and absolutely nobody else?
