The purpose of the hole that Maur the spaghetti abomination had dug was to create a large, dark pit with enough space for a skeleton. The whole thing was covered by a thick black blanket made from scratch. This was where the skeletons came to hide in the darkness to get away from the lights and sound of the world. It's where their bones came together with no boundaries between them or space.
