Question for FA's programmers

Hey there :)

I'm sorry if this is not the place to post this... on the 'tech' forums I didn't see any 'general' subforum, just those to report problems with the site and such, so if a mod knows of a better place for this post that I didn't see.. sorry for the trouble!

I was asked to do a lil program for a friend who has more than 40k submissions to review. His job doesn't let him see FA more than every 2 months and for just some days, so sometimes during the short periods he's at home, he just doesn't have time to open tabs, check what he likes, fav, and clean. That's why he got to this situation.

So he asked me to do a program that would go to his pending submissions and save them, so he can then watch them in his spare time and when he comes back home, he'll just have to go fav whatever he liked.

I told him I didn't know if I could do it, but I'd try. I made a little test today trying to login to FA using coldfusion. It was unsuccessful. So I need a techie's help there to see what did I miss. Also, I wasn't going to run the script without some admin's consent and knowledge. Don't want somebody there to freak out seeing so many requests all of a sudden!

So, anybody care to lend me a paw there? :) Or should I tell my friend to forget about it for good?

Thanks in advance!

Your friend cares way too much about his furry porn.

That said, I'll give you a little tip. Client and server is always just a set of POST/GET requests from the browser. If you're trying to create a script to login to a site and do things and you don't know why it's not working I'd recommend just downloading a proxy app like Webscarab to intercept the requests after loggin in and doing what you're doing like normal in order to see what you're missing.

I'm assuming you mean "Programmers on FA", not "The people who programmed FA".

Because they'reyak's busy, you know, trying to fix FA and stuff.

That's why there should be a "donation" drive so yak can hire more people to fix the site. poor guy pretty much works alone in Neers basement.

Lets start a collection!

If you use image slurping programs to leech the site you can be pretty sure there is a ban in your future. Bandwidth isn't free. =/

A) Is it any different then manual downloading every picture that is uploaded?

B) Should let people know that.

Yes, because manually downloading every picture to the site requires effort -vs- setting up a siphon to automatically grab /everything/ which has a negative impact to the site and other users.

I actually recently checked the TOS on this.. might be a good idea to include it . I figured it was just a mandatory thing at all sites, and was surprised not to see it on FA's.

(No, won't do it.. I don't follow enough artists to care :p )

Well I didn't mean the whole site. I meant your new submissions watchers uploaded. Is it any different if I use downthemall to download 10 new pictures from watchers vs manual downloading?

Not that it matters, I don't have the addon even installed. Just curious if it's actually different. I don't ever download pics anyway.

Thanks to everyone for your tips! Especially to Ricky. I'll try that!

I had also thought about something like downloadthemall, but like Dragoneer pointed out, bandwith is not free, and resources are not just for one, so my idea is not to leech at high speed, but to leave the script running in a pace a normal user would do, like, one image every ten seconds or so. My friend has two months before the job is done anyway.

In any case, I'll wait to see if Yak or someone else that has done any programming related to FA can help me with the login part. If I finally go for a proxy thing to sniff the traffic, I'll still need to wait for an admin's approval for me to be able to run it legally. Don't want trouble just for helping a friend get his art (he's actually not a big pr0nz art ^^;)

An image-siphoning script is not what you're looking for anyway. At the simplest it sounds like you just want to generate a text file with the submission name, artist and a link to the submission while clearing the list of submission notifications so your friend can run through them and fave the ones he likes/doesn't like on his own time.

The idea is to actually get them all, just not-at-a-bomb-speed manner. It'd also clean off his submissions, and during his offline time, he can actually check them out and note down in a notepad the submission # so he can fav them later.

Alright, so I finally found the way to use it. Been waiting for a response from the FA staff for 2 weeks now regarding the maximum of requests that is acceptable per day and user. Remember we're talking about 45k submissions.

Would 1200 per day acceptable? separated by 10 seconds each? That's 20 pages of submissions per day and would get them in about 2 months, considering there will be new submissions every day.

Please, somebody, anybody, tell me something! ^^;
