Regarding "Normal" Furries

Hey everyone,

First of all, let me start of saying that I've considered myself a furry for the last 6 years. I want to get more involved in the fandom and go to cons and the such, but keep getting turned off by the weird, "stereotypical furry."

I understand that the fandom attracts lots of different people since it is so accepting to everyone. I'm trying to find out if there really are any "normal" guys out there in the fandom. I don't need any SJW bs about my thinking process or whatever, I just need a straight up answer. I'm looking around, a lot. I'm meeting up with furries, messaging around, and just trying to get a feel for what is out there. I'm an athletic, fit, chill guy, and I'm just trying to find similar people in the fandom, if there are any. Please share your experiences, as I really want to get more involved in the fandom. I don't judge anyone, but I see nothing wrong in that I want to hang out with people that aren't embarrassing to hang out with.

I hope I do not offend anyone. This is just a tipping point in which I decide if I want to continue getting more involved in the fandom or not.

I don't know where you were looking at, but I've found plenty of normal people here. They are actually so normal that you wouldn't even guess them being furries. Some folks are a little strange, that's true, but you can always just not message them. I consider myself normal too, though I'm probably not the realest furry out there, I just have this thing for real life wolves and consequently for anthro wolves and foxes as well.

Normal is subjective, so I don't know what your normal is. I wouldn't call myself a normal furry because i don't go to meets or cons or furry underwear parties. Other than that, though, I just hang about these forums. I hardly even go to the actual art sites.

I'm here solely because i feel comfortable here. I can like animals and not be judged. I will admit having a sexual side to the fandom, but i tend to keep it to myself unless around other close furfag friends.
Assuming abnormality is the sexual side, I'm sorry. My dick gets hard at some things and not others. I can't tell it what to do. It doesn't define me as a person, though.

Anyways, point is, whats a normal?

I've never been able to get a universal definition for what exactly a furry is. I do consider myself to be furry though. I have never been to a con or furmeet, but I like perusing the forums on a couple of sites. I do a little anthro writing and artwork. I like costume-making and have been doing my own for about nine years. My favorite videogames are generally available only on older consoles, like the PS2 and Gamecube. I've read well over a thousand books in my life, and among my favorites are Watership Down and Negima. I'm a university senior in Biology and a member of the university rowing team. I've also been very active in the international community, meeting people from all over, learning about their cultures and helping them adjust to life in the USA. Of the roughly 100 people I consider friends, only three of them are furries, and I've never personally met any of them, but tend to have more interesting conversations with them than anyone I typically speak with.

How can anyone expect to be treated as normal when there are so many areas of interest they can be involved in? I spend my time with bodybuilders, D&D players, theater performers, movie critics, dedicated scientists, foreign students who speak English with varying degrees of success, and anthropomorphism enthusiasts. When a population can be split into so many cultures that there is no majority or average to measure them against, the normal becomes being unique. That's my take, anyway.

Like pretty much everyone else said, its hard to define "normal". From a psychological perspective, people that are not considered normal are called deviant; it basically means they do something that is different from the activities of daily living of a normal person in their society. So something along the lines of, in the case of furries, not being able to dissociate their actual life from their furry identity, being obsessed with furry porn to the point where it affects their everyday life, etc... generally things that affect their everyday life in such a way that they can't function

Generally I'd say the majority of furries can at least function in society. Most of the time the ones that are the most "not normal" are the ones who are the most willing to become friends with others and be out there, so when you first get into the fandom you usually find those people first because they're out there and... well you get the point. The first time I openly told people i was a furry online the first real acquaintance i had turned out to be a pedo with a crush on me, and as you can imagine that was cut off quite quickly after i figured it out. it took about a year to find people who weren't creeps and actually could function normally... and then i found more and more after that.

I wouldn't look into it too much. While it's true that the fandom has a reputation for attracting its fair share of legitimate crazies, you'll find that a lot of the ones that seem it are only acting the part because it's "edgy". Sometimes you just have to give some the benefit of the doubt, and get to know them off forum.

I'm fairly athletic (I say fairly.. I can run quickly but not for long...), but I'm not really chilled. I'm that guy who's either has a lot of energy or he gets ready quickly after tiring. I'd much rather go climb a tree than stay inside with a thousand different snacks watching sitcoms or playing video games. Even now, I'm outside typing on a phone. But I'd say that if people were to look at me normally, they'd probably see some long haired punk.

Thanks for the responses guys. I understand that "normal" is such a vague word, but I couldn't think of something different, lack of better terms. I'll keep trying to get involved in the fandom. Trying to open up more without being scared off from the entire thing haha.

When I say "normal," I'm trying to get at like "Someone that isn't viewed as weird when looking at them or speaking to them." Put the whole furry thing aside, just the whole social interaction.

I know your pain, pal. It's tough to be a furry that's main perk is his/her personality and not some fake sexuality. I can safely say I'm a bisexual male that's comfortable with his own dong; no fancy SJW words here, no disgusting fetishes, that's it.

If you're so concerned about finding normies, get involved with conventions more. At least that way you have the opportunity to assess someone firsthand.

(Wish I was better at both hearing what people say and saying things when relevant. Crowded events can wind up smile, nod, and pretend I'm able to comprehend what I'm hearing territory. ><)

Unless by "normal", you mean "not cringy" then i guess that all depends on what makes you cringe. Unfortunately there can be a lot of that in ANY fandom. Furriness attracts lots of different people with lots of different quirks for lots of different reasons, mostly due to the uniqueness of the characters. This obviously attracts lots of outcasts and persons of low self-esteem, depressed and those with an abnormally high sense of identity.
Take from that what you will but i can say from my own experience, i've met a lot of furries within certain...let's say "niche" groups -that have been very "normal" compaired to what i might have previously thought before getting to know them.

I'm not sure if choosing who I want to hang out with, and who I want to not associate with is being a "picky elitist." I want to be around people I feel comfortable around, not people I'd rather just be left alone by.

Being " normal" is super subjective in life and this fandom. If you get along with people and you feel comfortable then you have found your normal.

Also I'm really tickled by the fact that your intro sounds like a online dating pitch. " athletic chill guy looking for normal furry friends.."

That right there itself turns heads.
