Hey, folks!

I've recently started delving into science fiction books and quickly fell in love with the genre <3 However, I do not know many good titles, and my thirst is far from quenched hahaha
SO, I would love sharing my recommendations and getting to know some from you. I usually prefer hard sci-fi, but all suggestions are welcome!

I will try to keep this post updated with all the titles and probably a link to the book's Good Reads page, so people can take a look if interested.

THE LIST~

  1. Claws and Starships
  2. Her Instruments series (4 volumes)
  3. Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos saga, 4 volumes)
  4. Project Hail Mary
  5. Red Rising (Red Rising Saga, 7 volumes)
  6. The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth's Past Series, 3 volumes)
  7. We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse series, 4 volumes)

My recommendations:

Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos saga, 4 volumes)
91cI7fKu0vL.jpg

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope—and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands. (from goodreads)

The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth's Past Series, 3 volumes)
20518872.jpg

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. (goodreads)

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse series, 4 volumes)

Bob Johansson has just sold his software company and is looking forward to a life of leisure. There are places to go, books to read, and movies to watch. So it's a little unfair when he gets himself killed crossing the street.
Bob wakes up a century later to find that corpsicles have been declared to be without rights, and he is now the property of the state. He has been uploaded into computer hardware and is slated to be the controlling AI in an interstellar probe looking for habitable planets. The stakes are high: no less than the first claim to entire worlds. If he declines the honor, he'll be switched off, and they'll try again with someone else. If he accepts, he becomes a prime target. There are at least three other countries trying to get their own probes launched first, and they play dirty.
The safest place for Bob is in space, heading away from Earth at top speed. Or so he thinks. Because the universe is full of nasties, and trespassers make them mad - very mad. (goodreads)

If you're looking for "Furry Sci-FI" check out The Furry Future Anthology, or most works by M.C.A. Hogarth, which involve genetically engineered human-animal hybrids fleeing earth and creating their own sort of Federation (The Prince's Game series is a bit of a WTF IMO, but thankfully she made a summary of the series in order to bypass this and still get the main plot for the rest of the series)

Her world-building and character interaction is phenomenal IMO. I Think the Stardancer series or Her Instruments series and Claws and Starships would be best for most starting out. Although I think some of the stuff in Claws and Starships might be slightly amended/retconned.

When it comes to hardness of sci-fi it's hard to beat Andy Weir. I recently read his latest book "Project Hail Mary" and I think it was absolutely great. The main character wakes up with amnesia in a spaceship far from home and has no idea who, where or why he is. Gradually he starts to remember things. An alien microbe is threatening Earth by making the Sun dimmer and he is on a mission to find a way to stop it. Amesiac hero might be a cliche but there's a good justification for it in the book. There are two intertwined storylines, the ongoing space mission and the past events which the main character remembers bit by bit. Both storylines are full of surprises and plot twists, there are always problems that come in the way and get solved using SCIENCE! I can't tell much more without spoilers but if you like very hard sci-fi that goes into extreme detail about all the juicy science and technology then I can't recommend this enough. Or anything by Andy Weir really.

I think that when talking about science fiction, it is worth mentioning the classics. I recently read Frankenstein and really enjoyed it. This is quite a progressive book for its time. I am writing a research paper on this story; with the help of https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/frankenstein/ I have already done considerable work. I hope that my love for such literature will help me cope with this task. By the way, I've found many cool books in this thread that I will definitely add to my must-read list.

My country has a lot of sci-fi hard like a lamppost (and we had "serious fantasy" with adult themes way before George R. R. Martin made it popular in the world). Unfortunately it's typically not translated; I'd guess it's considered kinda "too exotic" on other markets. Stanisław Lem is probably the only author more renowned internationally and his sci-fi is typically firmly science -based (even if bit vintage) and very serious in its tone. Unless you encounter one of his more satirical works but these are fun too.

As a classic sci fi fan I'm always gonna recommend Heinlein and Asimov. I especially enjoy Issac Asimov's short story collections, for bite sized but incredibly memorable sci fi, usually with quite a bit of actual backed science. Robert Heinlein has a lot more artistic and gorgeous descriptions. My favorite of his is Podkayne of Mars.

In terms of more modern fiction, I've been enjoying Murderbot Diaries, about an artificial being who hacked their own firewalls and used the opportunity to watch constant TV, as well as Deathworlders (first chapter found here: https://deathworlders.com/books/deathworlders/chapter-00-kevin-jenkins-experience/) about how humans are from an incredibly deadly world in comparison to all other aliens.

(goodreads) And I think that Brave New World is one of the best books I've ever read in the science fiction genre. And I recommend everyone to read it if you haven't done it yet because it's for sure worth reading. A few days ago, I reread it again because I need to write a satire paper, and I want to include the info from the book. I also found some information on https://studydriver.com/satire-essay/ which turned out to be my big helper because those satire essay examples provided me a lot of ideas. And there, I also found a paper dedicated to Brave New World, so I think I did the right to including it in my work.
Wow, the list looks impressive. I haven't heard about half of the book
I think I'll for sure find something interesting to read

P.S. I know that a lot of people consider Brave New World as science fiction, what do you think about it?
