Serious Suggestion on Servers ^^

I know it's gonna seem like I'm going to bad mouth the server, but really, Why does FA continue the service with this company? They go down so often, atleast few times a month if not many more. So why not just switch to a newer and better server company?

I'm not really familiar with how servers would so don't start calling me a F'ing noob because I don't know the full situation either. It's just a genuine question why continue it if it seems so bad? Is it because of costs? Is it because that IS the best service around? I just kinda wanna know ^_^

I don't know much about servers/cost/efficiency, but I'm willing to bet that FA doesn't make damn near enough donations to support godmachine. :\

I would think so.. i'm not much for understanding it either but I'm sure they just don't get enough donators each month to upgrade to a better quality service

The server manager and colo owner, Gushi, is a furry, a user of this site, and (IIRC) a personal friend of Preyfar/Dragoneer. He's also the owner/operator of the ISP the site uses, Gushi Systems.

Unless I'm mistaken, Preyfar actually owns both the website/database server ("Tiamat") and the data storage server ("Bahamut"), and they are merely stored and operated from Gushi's colo facility.

Sure, a bigger company might have a better facility and longer uptimes, but it would also probably be a good bit more expensive, and wouldn't have that personal touch we get with Gushi.

Oh? That's really neat. Like I said, i'm not much for knowing about servers and such but I wasn't sure if it was a personally own server system ect. That is pretty cool though

I'm not saying it's a bad server really, I just kinda feel bad for Mr. Dragoneer. It's just so much work for him and his buddies to have it failing here and there.

yeah.. it must be, sadly i bet not enough people donate to FA. It's a great site, I don't know what i'd do without it really. I hate DA and sheezy. I always get an uncomfortable feeling and if your not a grand artist you never get recognized

Ha, like you don't have to be a good artist or an extremely sexual art-whore to be recognized to the same degree on FA.

Though I imagine the server downtimes are worth the (probably) massive discount having a friend that runs a server would get you.

We're researching into new hosting companies. Trust me when I say that these outages, which are NOT on FA's side, pisses me off greatly. If it was us goofing off, I'd just lower my head into my hands and sigh and go "Oh god, I hope I wasn't the cause of it".

When it's the hosting facility losing power... and their preventative measures failing, I develop spontaneous Tourette's.

Well, I understand yes, on FA that you do need some hint of talent to get watchers.. but like i have 200+ people watching me and to be honest, I think im just mediocre. I just mean like, you don't have to make every picture a digital god-like picture to get noticed, and people seem to be a hell of alot friendlier on FA then anywhere else I've been. Sure we have our drama, and it can get way overboard, but thats just the way things are. It, in my opinion, its much better then trying to get yourself out there on FA then it is on DA

And yeah that is pretty lucky of being able to have a friend run it, It might be alittle more difficult but hey it cuts down expenses. If anything we should all be grateful we even can have this great community to support our work for free.

Uhm, sorry to correct you... but Gushi System is separate from the hosting facility FA uses, and is not related at all. Fur Affinity is currently hosted by a different company, and whil Gushi is our SysAd on the hardware end, the outage in question has zero to do with Gushi Systems.

Oh i know you wouldn't want to have this all happen on purpose. How would that benefit you to let it shut down? It's nobody's faults really, I just feel bad, it must be so stressful

Actually.. Your right about my icon, I like to draw humans far more then furries, but that is because I've drawn them for many years. I just started to draw furries about two months ago, and i've grown to love them dearly <3

But that is one of the beauties about FA.. I CAN draw my humans and people like them, and then I can also draw my newly found furries as well =3 DA is like talking to a brick wall. I guess it's the people I love the best, we are all like a giant family.

We look after each other, and yet we also fight like brothers and sisters would. If one of us is in pain, most of us tend to them. Of course there are some real jerks that want to bring you down, but doesn't every family have a "black sheep"

In the end, no matter what people call us, furfreaks, furfags or whatever else word they can come up with, we stick together. There's like, how many of us? 16,000 i think i read earlier? well 16,000 furries can't be wrong =3

well the recent server outages might actually have to do with a power supply that probably got burnt-up or something. problems like that are a bitch to handle because most times it'll be down for days because the hardware guys are (1) having a day-off or (2) they have to order a new PSU because they do not have a spare in storage. yes the service the site has been with for ages is starting to go down hill, but with such a large populous and high amount of (i might be exaggerating) terabytes in files it'll be difficult for if and when the site is moved. it'd be down for probably over a week and you'll get asshats ranting "WHERE'S THE SITE WHY ISN'T IT UP YET RARARARARARARARARAR". of course its only a plausible prediction of the shitstorm that might happen.

on another note hope that someone wins the lotto and puts a good chunk of $$$ to FA

Well i do draw my own art, but again.. I don't think I'm that great to have over 200 watchers, my case it's probably just cuz of the porn!! XD And i do, I love furries
