My girl wants to know what furry is so explain it in a very nice way and don't make it sound weird.

ok, lets see, a fur is some1 who likes animals, weather it b animals in general or more commonly a specific species (fox, wolf, etc., etc.) there are also different levels in the fandom i suppose u could say. there r ppl who r just fans of the fandom and those who like artwork, fursuiters, and yes "closet furs". but the "closet fur" is not the only part of the fandom, there r plenty of ppl who go to cons to meet new ppl and hang out with friends.

to get a longer answer, hopefully some1 whos been in the fandom longer than me can explain it a little bit better and more in detail.

Furries are people who like art that includes anthropomorphic animals, like Disney's Robin Hood or Over the Hedge. I don't know why everyone is so worried that such a thing would sound weird.

Hmm... better to explain what sort of furry you are, given that furry can range from the very simple and innocent to some pretty crazy stuff. "Furry" is a very generic term that covers a great many things. It's like saying "I ran Linux" - yeah? Well which one, there are over 300 Linux distributions. :p

It would be best to explain that to her first before trying to explain what furry is and where you fit into it, so that she realizes it is a very generic term that, though it may encompass many things, does not necessarily represent you perfectly.

My girlfriend knows that Im a furry. She isnt a furry supposedly, although she did create a fursona for the fun of it. Shes cool with it.

Furry fandom and cub porn are two entirely separate things, it's just hard to explain that to people who haven't been here a while.

Well, one is a byproduct of the other, but no more than shotacon and yaoi, for example.

Yaoi is weeaboo for homosexuality is it not? What does that have to do with cub porn. Also it's not a by-product of the furry fandom so much a by-product of pedophilia.

yaoi is gay hentai (pornographic art drawn in a Japanese manga-like style), shotacon is underage gay hentai.

Not really, seems to me homosexuality being present in a subculture you're involved in is much easier to explain to a girlfriend then pedophilia.
