Main Site So, about FurAffinity...

It's been down for a while now. The coding in it isn't that great. If it's gotten itself into corrupted loops, who's to say it won't do it again?
Sure, the site staff and admins are trying their best to resolve the issue, at least of it being down. But it doesn't seem like it really takes much to tip over at all, and it just tipped itself over.

It worries me. I've made this site as sort of my central hub for all the art I favorite and all the other stuff I do. I do have a backup in the form of Deviant Art, but as of late I've noticed a bit of reduced activity there, at least on my receiving end. I wonder if I should hit up Weasyl too?

Now, I'm not saying we should all pack our bags and emigrate over to there instead, but FurAffinity as an internet structure is old, worn, and kind of unstable, like many ruins you see. And for it to still be a popular place to frequent for many furries is baffling. Even Deviant Art has updated it's system, at least a bit, with Eclipse. FA is falling behind kind of fast.

I don't want to be pessimistic but I'm not sure how much longer this great kingdom will last.

I have gone through the same thing with my gallery, going from Furaffinity, to Deviantart, and then to Weasyl. In my experience with Weasyl, it seems to be pretty dead. There seems to be a lot of uploading, but little community interaction. The site has a low monthly visitor count.

I would recommend expanding to sites like Inkbunny, Sofurry, Furrylife.online, or Furry Amino for just art, or perhaps an established social media site like Twitter or Tumblr? Of course, Weasyl works as well.

EDIT: added some more sites to the list. It has come to my attention IB is a fester hole for kiddie porn. While that is true, the site itself could still be useful to someone. But as I outlined in a reply to someone, DONT JOIN ANY ART SITE OF WHICH YOU DISAGREE WITH OR WITH ITS USERBASE.

I think that's both a bit pessimistic and premature. It's not like it's gone for more than 24h already. If I were running my busniness over FA, then I'd be a bit icky after 24h but if FA was my only source of revenue/commissions I'd be a bad businessman anyway.

Errors happen, but it's not like this is some sort of gaming service that has to be on 24/7. The FA team seems to be engaged and competent enough to solve things, and it's not like the first time an error like this has happened to a website. The website of my old Uni was down all the time because they had a stupid operator.

In any case, diversifying is always a good idea, regardless of what's going on.

Hmm... Man, that sounds kind of asocial. I wonder if I can bring the party to Weasyl, or if my efforts to spice the place up would only fizzle out.
Inkbunny? I hope that's not as bad as e621... I've heard that place has extreme amounts of lewds with no filters.
I've tried Tumblr, even tried to get a character-based AMA going, but alas, I'm not very good at bringing people around to ask questions. Also, they had a NSFW purge and it scared everyone away. It was too inactive for me anyways so I closed out my account there.
I'm still trying Twitter. So far I'm only following people I know with tame enough posts that I can tolerate, but my Following count has never risen above 14 people. I just can't network or put myself out there very well.

I always worry about FA. It has been my home online for the past 14 years. I can't imagine my online social life and what it would be without FA. But I'm getting ready to make sure, when FA comes back, that I have every last item of importance backed up somewhere else. I admittedly have some art I hastily submitted that I might not have saved anywhere else. I know...bad...so it's a top priority for me to do that asap.

Regardless of where you go or what sites you will try, try reaching out directly to people. Networking personally with random gift art and/or just a simple hello can get you a following. It doesn't matter what sites you join, you must make yourself known.

Also, you could try joining completely art-focused forums like conceptart.org or similar to help not only find people, but to also make your art more appealing to potential followers. The more appealing your art is, the easier it will be to gain followers passively.

FA isn't gonna die due to a couple of hiccups. It'll be fine. That's why we have backups of the database. I agree with Conor, especially on diversifying, but a spasm because it's having issues now isn't an appropriate reaction. It's not furry apocalypse. Yet.

The issue we're experiencing does not appear to be related to FA's coding on our side, but a sort of software bug with the database side of things. We brought in additional support to assist us yesterday and even they were unable to help pinpoint and resolve it.

Hey, as someone who works in the IT business and trend of site security being a thing and all.
Wouldn't this be a good time to also make the site HTTPSecure? Or would that be a big issue to implement?

I was under the impression it was?

I gather it's heavy on cub stuff, and is where many of those artists went after FA tightened up their rules on that. Personally I won't even click on any links to art hosted on Inkbunny now.

yeah, a lot of cub artists/fans migrated to IB. Of course, you can always filter out cub porn, but having to share a site with people who openly peddle that shit is sometimes enough to make people stay away

This is what happens when the heads are more concerned with installing monetary transactions systems than keeping the site less than a decade out of date.

It's enough to make me stay away. A lot of that material is illegal in the UK. Making an account and frequenting a site that hosts illegal material just so you could set up a filter not to see that material would be a tough one to explain to police or courts!

Those would have to be some pretty corrupt systems to see filtering out the objectable content from a site you know you shouldn't frequent as a sign of guilt of itself...
Jesus, why would anyone want to send me to a place like that?! I'd freaking explode on anyone who makes such horrible crap like that! I'd take my chances with Weasyl any day. Those guys have to be the reason why there's anti-furries.

See my icon.

On a real note, quality of life and flavor updates to the site are super welcome. FA is just running into an issue (as most sites do) at the moment. They're working very hard to get it back up and working for you guys. Thank you for your patience.

We don't mind answering questions that are constructive and helpful. Taking potshots (and missing those potshots due to misinformation) is neither of those.

Staff understand situations like these are frustrating for users. They're not exactly instances where staff are pleased about what has happened either. Please keep that in mind, and know that a LOT of effort is being put into restoring things. Throwing barbed insults at those who have literally been up all night to get the problem fixed is pretty disrespectful.

Come on, that was uncalled for. Imagine if you had a site that had several thousands of people on it at a time. I'm no website designer, but I can't imagine how much time and energy is needed to keep a site that is as big as FA online. It's going to get fixed eventually, so please refrain from insulting the people that are trying their hardest to get FA back up.

You're not making any friends here budd-o.

Though, on the flipside, tags blacklisting would be a pretty cool feature to add to FA if possible.

Talking as a user, I understand the frustration, but talking as a programmer... I'm very sure they must be even more frustrated than any of us.

So instead of complaining I'd rather thank them for the hard work and send cheers... :(
