Some things to help with depression

Hello... So as you can read from the title this thread is going to be about depression. Now, I can be happy one day and sad/depressed the next, and I've learned a few things that might help some people.

1. Try not to be alone for long periods of time. Once you are alone your mind can gather either bad thoughts or good ones with no distractions which can affect the rest of your day.

2. Try to keep your mind occupied. This might be a given, but you always want to stimulate your brain with something, whether it be talking to someone, watching T.V., or just surfing the web. It helps ease your head and gets rid of most of your stress once you are distracted by something.

3. (This one is kind of a personal thing) But try not to listen to moving music when alone. For me it brings sorrow and reminds me of everything bad in my life, past or present.

So that's just a few quick tips to help with your depressed/stressful days. Feel free to leave any other tips for people to use! Thanks for reading :)

You're already doing what I usually recommend as a first step--writing out what's bothering you. I've struggled with depression on and off for the last five years and find that there's little I can do to fight it, because that tends to make it worse. Embrace the down times and do the best you can to surround yourself with fun, caring people to level you out with some happy times. You've got this! =-)

Also, doing outdoors and walking helps a lot.

For me, its pretending to be the Portuguese kingdom and the joys of subjugating the indies. EU4 is my gateway drug.

For me, one word: Guitar. No matter how bad my day was or how shitty I feel, my world is at peace with a guitar in my hands.

Having a pet helps, no matter the size and animal. My betta fish helped me through my depression, and all I ever did was feed it every day.

Having someone to talk to really helped me. I was depressed, suicidal, and self-harmed for about seven years before I told anyone, and since I spilled to my best friend things have gotten better. Not skipping through unicorn rainbow ice cream better, but I've told my family some and got put on medication to help me; which was a huge step since I really didn't want to get put on meds (and there were times I didn't even want to get better). Having someone to fall back on is uber important, in my opinion.

Sleeping helps. I recently broke up with my girlfriend and I had a dream about her comforting me. I talked to her on Saturday and we agreed to stay away from each other for awhile before we talk again.

I find watching funny videos helps. Funny tv shows especially.

Thanks for the tips. I have a friend with depression and I really want to help her.
I've suggested pets/ her art before, but they weren't recieved well and made me feel bad for trying. It seems like offering help/advise isn't wanted.

I'm hoping she'll want to do some projects with me, so we can both be social and active together again. Does that seem like the right thing to do?

Whenever I'm feeling sad, I like to write some poems or continue in a short story, often while listening to heavy metal and classic rock. (Ozzy Osbourne does wonders for your mood.)

When I have the time, I head to the highest point in Lynchburg and just stare out into infinity. On a clear day, visibility is up to 15 miles.

For me it would be walking around in the park while being accompanied by someone. (Mostly my parents). I can not be left alone but sadly no one at home can stay home for a whole day wich is very understandable but I can not go to college when I am in a real bad depression. But that's a long storry..

When I'm feeling down I usually either:
1.Go for a walk through the desert and pretend it's Fallout:New Vegas
2.
Jerk off.

3. Just take a nap

Other ideas (which are also supported by research):

*Keep a daily gratitude journal, and re-read it when you're feeling blue.

*Volunteer, and/or do generous, altruistic, or kind things for others.

*Explore a new hobby or interest.

But.... I like to be alone most of the time, I find the silence better than being around other teenagers that are merely interested in partying and trying to fit in.

As for music, I love listening to sad music, and more than that play it on my guitar. Actually one of my favorite songs to play on the guitar is "alone" from the naruto soundtrack.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like to be alone too. But when something is already bothering me and I can't talk to anyone, it doesn't help.

I really hope this is helping some people out with their depression, and thanks to the people who have given other ideas/tips!

I for one will dance if I'm feeling down, to get my emotions out. It helps a ton personally.

It seems the more I talk to people the worse the situation seems to get, so unless it's life threatening I usually keep it to myself ^.^

You can dance :O, I'm a little jelly now -_-

I know many introverts (and I'm one myself) whose depression and anxiety actually tends to worsen when they are forced to socialize for the sake of socializing, especially with people they don't like.

BUT, it is generally true that isolating yourself for an extended period of time when you're depressed can actually make your depression worse, because there's no one there to break you out of your cycle of rumination and negative self-talk.

It really comes down to what helps YOU, for me I can't be alone for long periods of time and letting my mind wander. For other people like you said can be alone for a whole day and not feel any depression. It also has to do with you, yourself, because depending on your attitude towards things, your mood can change drastically.

visiting this site once in a while helps

i like that game, but omg can it be a lot after a while, i can waste a week on a game and get nowhere.

lately just getting off my butt and going for a bike ride instead of being lazy and taking the bus helps a lot. I never subscribed to the idea that you have to get out there and do something, because a lot of things will just trigger anxiety in me, and that just makes the whole situation ten times worse. simply watching the latest episode of fps helps a lot for me sometimes, going to sing political songs with friends durring the noon hour monday though friday helps, makes me feel useful (my job fails at that).

anyway this is something that everyone just kind of has to learn do deal with themselves.

As long as you take some sort of weapon with you for #1, these are good suggestions. Running into a deathclaw weaponless might make the situation worse than when you started. Just remember to put the safety on before you start activity #2 or #3.
