Tail mechanics?

Something that is almost if not ever covered in furry art tutorials is The mechanics of a tail on a biped body I find. Not where to place the tail on The body but how it actually would move logically ex when in a actionpose, walking, etc.

I don t just want to stick on The tail randomly and have it be places in a random direction... Im sure there is a logic to its chosen direction in a pose?

Trying to find info on tail biomechanics however is not that.. Easy. Any General rules one can follow? Is it just used for counterbalance or balance in a pose?

.... Even if tail on biped is... Practically useless? Even James Cameron avatar movie fucked it up some.....

TL:DR: how tf does the tail work on a furry? Refs? I want to understand how it would move logically. Or do you just put it in whatever direction you like?

Im prob thinking too hard about this...

Not sure if it will help you any, but I wear good quality ears/tail/fangs/collar normally IRL and I spent a lot of time paying attention to my tail in motion as I move and dance in mirrors, having been a little obsessed with a "natural" feeling tail as opposed to "just a costume".

I find a good bounce movement that feels natural is about midpoint to tip if you're longer than 2 feet, and a straight sway if shorter, if that helps. Lilk finding a resonance when swaying a rope when long and a gentle push when not.

For example, when I walk wearing a shorter tail, my right leg forward will make it sway to the right side as it follows the sway of my ass. BUT if I'm wearing a longer 3 foot tail, the midpoint will bounce to the right making the tip and the rest bounce to the left instead.

Does that help or make any sense to you?

It Kinda does but if theres a vid that be even more helpful to see it in action lest I would try it myself xD

Hard to find some good vids that aren't porn, but let me see what I can do.

Here's a video that has a stiff tail, a foam insert or some other stiffer material (as opposed to cloth core). IMO it's why it looks a little unnatural and misses the "bounce" of a good quality one, but captures the side-to-side part so pretend this is shorter:

Here's one with a shorter "yarn" tail. All weight and no core so it just sways...

All the others I can find are porn for longer tails sadly but I'll keep looking for you, (or just make one for ya). This one is close but you can tell they have it stiff, but you can KIND of see the midpoint moving separately a little:

Ideally, try and picture the hips to the right, the midpoint sways to the right, and the tip bends the other way to the left, then as you step it reverses as you step. I really wish I could find a good video for you, but all of them seem to have stiff core tails (which negate this natural movement).

Thank you so much for the effort! And I dont mind watching the prons to get it either xD thank you very much if you do find one or make a demo (really that is over and beyond kind but ya ofc don t have to!) alm these help to understand alot more how it works
