I am going to answer both these questions. . .
You see as every fur and non-fur loses their socks it ends up somewhere in the ether, in the endless abyss of stars.
I have a team of furs tries to send them back but seeing how many talks about how they are gone forever. . .I am sorry must be a mistake on their part.
That or just never found. . Just so many.
You all do well, to not lose them! Perhaps; rolling the tops of them with the matching pair before tossing the wash. As for me socks I tend to favor OTK (over the knee) These are my current favorite.

I usually have to buy the men's socks or the diabetic socks because they don't make size 12 lady socks :')
