What kind of facial expression is that supposed to signify, anyway? I've never seen a human (or animal) face do anything remotely like that. Is it purely an Internet creation?

I'm totally not trying to imitate that emote in a mirror right now.

I see it as a mouth-open, eyes-rolling, head-tossing sort of motion. And it's not only sarcasm, but it's also used to make a less serious tone or just keep things a bit more lighthearted.
