Thumbnails and sometimes Images don't load (send help)

None of the cookies needed to load thumbnails and etc are blocked, but still nothing???
I've looked on other devices, my ipad, phone, even some consoles, but the errors still occur??
Is this site side? or client side?

It's been doing this for coming up on three full days for me now, and it's only getting worse. Weirdest thing is, it only started 24 hours after the site recovered from its latest DDoS attack. Oh, and it's only affecting certain people, despite clearly being an actual site issue.

maybe it's only affecting certain parts of the servers?

No idea... Honestly, if it weren't for the three days' worth of new submissions we'd lose, I'd say they should just roll the whole site back to how it was before this started and see if that works...

then that would mean all the people who somehow still can post, and have no problems will lose the submissions they've posted if the sites rolled back XP
even same with favs (i guess)

there are 30 to 40,000 thousand users on average on FA so it can be done if we work together
Or maybe, given that this doesn't fix thumbnails and only some people are experiencing this, an actual fix can be found.

i think that they're working on fixing it, but that this is the only reliable method as of now
we must have patience

I certainly hope so, because I don't want to just have tons of missing thumbnails everywhere, and I sure as hell don't have the time or patience to go through thousand upon thousands of images, see whether they load or not in both preview and full form, and send in a problem ticket for every single one that doesn't work.

there's a solution for individual images
i don't know if you already know this, but, if you open up the images on a separate tab and put a question mark and a random string of letters behind the end of the url (i.e. ?hdjhfdjfdhfdjhfdjhfdj) than it should be fixed

Yeah, that's not a solution, that's a time-consuming band-aid on a sitewide shotgun wound. And that still requires you to take the time to see which ones work or not, AND it STILL does not fix thumbnails or, as I've discovered are crapping out now, people's avatars.

well, at least they're doing something

I haven't any issues with the thumbnails on my own submissions (EDIT: Some of them did disappear even though I could still see them earlier, and they only disappeared on certain screens), but I was running into the actual images themselves not loading after I was submitting them. What I ended up doing was just replacing the source file of the image with the same exact image, and that seemed to fix it. You could probably do the same to fix the thumbnails as well.
Well, that's better than nothing, if it's indeed a proven-to-work method, but that still means a lot of wasted time for people with a couple thousand submissions.

It’s an issue that should eventually resolve itself, if nothing else, though I can’t say how soon as I don’t recall exactly how the Cloudflare caching works.

Basically, FA has Cloudflare cache images on its end, which saves FA a ton of bandwidth (since the file doesn’t have to be sent from FA’s servers for every request). This should also limit site slowdowns during peak hours, IIRC. When the site knows an image has been replaced, it automatically tells the cache it’s not current anymore, and it’s recached.

What I don’t recall is how images fall out of cache otherwise. Might be time since last request, might be some other similar factor. But eventually the image won’t be cached with Cloudflare anymore, and at that point it should work again. Knowing what images are having issues enables technical staff to force those images out of cache, but beyond that, any solution other than just waiting it out would likely have to be balanced against what sort of bandwidth load FA itself can handle. Just recaching absolutely everything at once could bring on its own kind of issues.

Note that it’s been literal years since I was privy to discussions about Cloudflare caching, so my memory of the details is limited. I’m pretty sure broad strokes are accurate, but beyond that I could for all I know be misremembering some parts.

EDIT:
Looks like they’re trying to get Cloudflare to figure out what’s going wrong on their end:

I noticed a little while ago that all of the thumbnails and submissions that were missing are now visible to me, so it might be fixed. However, it could also be a regional thing, so it might have been fixed where I am and some other places, but not everywhere else. Also, it might only be working temporarily, so they could disappear again later of something goes horribly wrong or if work keeps being done on it.
They should all be fixed now:

If the problem recurs, obviously report it at that time, but it should be resolved.
