Trouble Getting the Words Down

I’ve noticed that whenever I’m in an RP (which is once in a blue moon), I’m able to write hundreds of words per post, with over a thousand over the course of a day.

However, when I’m trying to write some fiction on my own, I can barely get a couple hundred a week.

Why am I so prolific when I’m in an RP, but I move at a snail’s pace when writing alone? This is so frustrating to me! Is anyone able to give me some insight into how to apply the motivation I have during RPing into regular writing?

I can only speak for myself, but I think it's easier when you have someone to play off of. Writing by yourself means you're it. Everything from characters to pacing to story to phrasing is up to you. And that can be hard and you can get stuck.

But with a roleplay, that load gets shared. There is at least one character that you're not responsible for and someone who can help drive the story if you're in a slump. And best of all imo, it gives you something to respond to. It's not just coming up with ideas in the dark, but having constant prompts within every scene. It's a godsend, honestly.

If this sounds at all like your experience, maybe find someone to co write with you, or at least someone who you can use as a sounding board for ideas in the moment.

I might try that, though what I plan to write is bound to be pretty... niche, I guess? I won’t go into detail. If there was only some way I could emulate an RP partner, like how I play chess with myself at work, I doubt I’d have writer’s block again. Thank you for responding, it gives me something to consider.

I talk to myself incessantly, trying to embody the different characters as I go. It's hit and miss.

Good luck!
