Where I normally hang out, furries are tolerated at best, reviled at worst. The overwhelming perception is that furries are all a bunch of socially awkward yiffing perverts obsessed with sex.

But inevitably some actual furries or furry supporters post and say “No it’s not like that, most of us are not into the sex stuff! CSI made us all look bad” and so on.

So I think… Okay, I’ll give them the benefit of doubt. I mean, the freakiest parts of a fandom are always going to be what stands out, right? And the media is always going to exaggerate. I’m sure it’s really not as all that, right?

I heard about FA from some friends. Seemed to be a pretty large, active furry site. I’ll go have a look and see what it’s like.

The first thing I noticed, browsing the art, was that, among other ways, it’s organized by… fetish? By FETISH? Really? (Some bizarre fetishes too. And calls it 'Furry specialty' to boot) Seriously? By fetish?

The other thing that struck me was the ads- nearly all seemed to depict ‘sexy’ furries with ‘come hither’ expressions, and the one I did click on basically took me to a porn comic of some sort.

Okay, it’s not hurting anyone, but from my casual outsider’s perspective: furries really look sex and fetish obsessed, and draw some creepy things. It looks like a very prominent part of furry culture and not a tiny subset of creeps like I thought. That is the impression a site like FA gives.

Is FA the norm or are other sites like this too? I’m afraid to google for more because I know some twisted stuff exists.

So why the heck do furries still try to defend it and say ‘Furry isn’t about sex!’ when actual furry sites seem to show that, by and large, YES, yes it is? Are they in denial?

Question to the furries who genuinely AREN’T into the sex side of things (You do exist right?) - Does it bother you that the fandom really does come across as creepily sex crazed to the average outsider? Does it make you embarrassed at all? Do you wish it was different?

Does it bother me? Not really. A lot of the people here have dug their own graves. If you really look around on FA, porn is everywhere. You just learn to accept/tolerate it. If they want to know more, they can ask or do some research. I'd be happy to post links.

Does it make me embarrassed? No. Anyone worth anything would do some deep research to figure out what they find they like or dislike. I'm only embarrassed when people don't know what it is.

Do I wish it was different? A little, yes. There are some decent people out there in this fandom, but it seems that quite a few just want porn. They're hard to find in this mass, but they're there. I wish that some people would tone down the porn thing and that there were more decent people that didn't just think with their other brain.

Yep. That's all.

First off those are ads. They pay the nice people who run FA money so they can keep running FA. If someone was gonna give you X amount of money to advertise some porno I bet you'd do it.

And yes we exist, the sex part is not a big thing for me, and I could care less of what people have to say about furries. There's too many of us that have different perspectives on the whole thing for people to just come in and give us a bad name cause they see a little bit of messed up shit on (you guessed it) THE INTERNET! Get off your ass and seek information from real people who are in the fandom, not the internet that revolves around money to advertise porn and porn accessories. The internet can make anything look like it's about sex for shit sake. I know there's a lot of people out there that look at this as a sexual thing but just remember that it's not for everyone.

TL;DR: There's too many people in the fandom to make a generalization of the whole.

FA is a site that offers a medium for mature (read: XXX-rated) works, which is something many furry art sites do not -- so yes, it is particular to FA and a couple of other sites. There are plenty of "clean" sites with just as much traffic, but with FA offering a place to submit and view mature stuff then of course many of the userbase is going to be interested in precisely those features.

Same goes for the ads, sex sells, and the ad placement seems to be pretty cheap for the amount of coverage they get. Artists will advertise mature stuff here and their clean stuff on more heavily restricted sites.

I think a large portion of the furry fandom is sexual in nature, but I do agree that by no means are all furries interested or involved in that part. Some of the demographics involved (the large percentage of teens/young adults in the fandom) will have a lot to do with the main interests, too, although it's certainly not the only reason for it.

You'll get different responses depending on where you ask this sort of thing.

It doesn't bug me that the fandom comes across as sex-crazed mostly because I have such good friends who have nothing to do with that aspect of it, and if someone does approach you like that it's pretty easy to correct them (same with skipping fetish-whatever threads if they bug you).

As sites like FA are free to the public, anyone can access them, making the exchange of pornographic material easier and anonymous, and as a result, more prolific. This in turn, leads to the assumption by the average web surfer that this is the standard image of a "furry". However, those whose interest in the furry community exists solely in porn are a lot less likely to be seen outside of an internet setting, where most people would agree is a better place to get a feel for the fandom.

It actually did happen: Yerf, AKA the Squeaky Clean Furry Archive. Since the server crash a few years ago, the only significant furry site rising to cater to SCFA's audience is ArtSpots.

DAMN, you caught me red handed. Yes, your right, I do look at yiff. To tell you the truth, its not all that huff and puffed out to be. Some of the fandom leans towards yiff, hell most of it does; I treat it all like porn anyways. Though, I like to amaze over the artistic side, that's clean of course. Just try not to stray to off the furry line, the fetishes only get weirder, and weirder. Just keep the block on, if it bothers you. There was a clean PG furry con in Ottawa (don't know if it still runs), I went several years running, it wasn't huge but probably fielded 200-300 participants over the weekend? TONS of fun and nooooo sexual pressure/behaviour whatsoever.
